Patented May '7, 1889.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN I. NUNN, OF CLEVELAND, OHIOt CHIN AND LIP ADJUSTER FOR CORPSES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 402,764, dated May 7, 1889. Application filed March 6, 1889. Serial No. 302,083. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN I. NUNN, of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented "certain new and useful Improvements in Chin and Lipv Adjusters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilledin the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to combined chin and lip adj usters, the same comprising a chinsupport of ordinary construction, to which is added a lip-support adjustably connected, preferably, with the chin-rest, to the end that in addition to supporting the under jaw of a deceased person the under lip may also be supported and made to assume a natural position.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a front elevation. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, in section. Fig. 3 is a view of the lip-rest, showing it in position.
A represents the base having a hollow standard, o, for receiving the stem b of the chin-rest B, member a having a set-screw, a', for engaging stem b to hold the latter in adjustment.
The parts thus far described are of Wellknown construction, and by resting the base on the breast-bone and adjusting the chin-rest the under jaw is supported in position, closing the mouth.
It is also desirable to support the underlip in a natural position, and to this end I provide lip-rest, C. The latter may be constructed of any suitable material; but I nd that vulcanized rubber is Well adapted to the purpose, in that with gentle pressure applied the rubber adheres to the lip With sufficient force to hold the lip in position Without indenting or marking the lip. The lip-rest is more conveniently supported from the chin-rest, and for this purpose the chin-restnear the ends thereof is pierced for receiving the bows c, to which latter the lip-rest is attached, with thumb-screws b for engaging the bows to hold the chin-rest in place, bows c being preferably of spring metal, and by reason of the curvature of the bows the latter do not come in contact with the chin.
What I claim is* The combination, with a chin-adj us'ter, of a lip-adjuster, the latter being adjustably connected with and supported by the former,
substantially as set forth.
In testimonywhereof I sign this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
