CURRY-COMB.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 401,864, dated April 23, 1889.

Application filed February 25, 1888. Serial No. 265,274. (No model.)

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, OSCAR SMITH, a citizen of the United States,residing at Winona, in the county of Winona and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Curry-Combs; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and eX- act description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to curry-combs, and the novelty will be fully understood from the following description and claims, when taken in connection with the annexed drawings, in

which-- Figure 1 is avertical section of acomb constructed according to my invention, and Fig. 2 is an inverted plan view of the same.

Referring by letter to the said drawings, A indicates the back, which is preferably formed of wood, although it may be formed from any suitable material, and is provided 011 its face with parallel kerfs or grooves a, there being six shown in the present instance; but I do not wish to confine myself to any number.

B indicates the coils or loops, each row of which is formed from a single piece of Wire coiled. as more fully shown in Fig. 1, and these coils or loops are arranged in the kerfs or grooves of the back A.

By reference to Fig. 2 it will be observed that the eyes of the loops do not coincide in a transverse plane, but that each alternate row is so arranged that its coils or loops will fall in a plane between the coils of the adjacent rows, thereby presenting a more equally distributed abrading-surface, and one which will more effectively remove dirt and dust from the limbs of an animal.

It will also be observed that by having the grooves or kerfs in the face of the back when the wires are seated therein they will be more rigid in their bearing, and as a result their usefulness will be prolonged.

0 indicates securing wires or rods, which are designed to secure the abrading coils or loops in the grooved seats of the back. These wires are passed through suitable apertures in the said back and through a suitable number of the coils in the wire, when they may be prevented from coming out by heading or other suitable means. I have not illustrated any handle for this comb, for the reason that I do not wish to be confined to any special form.

It is obvious that any ordinary lo0p-strap might be employed-such as at present in use-or the face which I have shown may be used in connection with the back of any other suitable form. It may sometimes be desirable to provide the free side of the back with a comb of a different character, in which cases a reversible handle will be used.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a curry-comb, the combination, with the body having its face provided with grooves extending its entire length or width, of wires coiled and secured in the said grooves, substantially as specified.

2. A curry-comb consisting of a back having its face provided with parallel grooves, and a series of coils of Wire arranged in rows in the said grooves and having the coils of one row arranged in a plane between the loops or coils of the adjacent row, substantially as specified.
