SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 399,438,
1888. Berle-1N0. 286,162. (No model.) 7
Application filed September 11,
To all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that l, CHARLES BUTTERS ROG- ERS, of St. Peter, in the county of Nicollet and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Kitchen-Cabinets, of which the following is a specification.
The objects had in view by this invention are to provide a kitchen-cabinet which shall combine convenience and facility to carry out the purposes of the same; and to these ends the nature of the invention consists of the combination of parts, including their construction, ,substantially as hereinafter set forth and claimed. y
In accompanying drawings, Figure l is a front elevation ofmy-kitchen-cabinet. Fig.- 2 is a side elevation of the same, showing the drawer or box partly withdrawn. Fig. 3.is a sectional elevation thereof with ,the front down or in a horizontal position. 1 Fig. 4 is a rear elevation of the same, showing additional shelves or leaves thereof in their horizontal or extended position.
Inthe embodiment of my invention I employ an upright case or closure, A, made in its general form. i It may be inimitation of a secretary or book-case surmounted with an entablature. This case or closure is mounted upon casters, so that it may be readily moved about the house or other place. It consists, principally, of a back, a, a contracted top, a, side portions, a door, A. The lower part of the case or closure A is divided into two compartments by a central partition, I), the front edge of which is preferably curved outward from its lower edge upward to within a short distance of its upper edge, it then being inclined inward and upward, thus forming an angle or ofiset, as at b.
B B are compartments above referred to, the front portions of which are of the same contour as time being formed with an offset or ledge, 11 b ranging in line with the angle or offset 12' said ledges or offsets virtually forming a single continuous ledge or odset, the purpose of which will appear farther on. The drawers B B rest upon a transverse bridge, b secured edgewise to and in between the side pieces, a o of the case or closure A,
drawers or boxes occupying theand downward.
' that of the front edge of the partition I), each time mm. 12,1ss9.
the bottoms of which drawers stand well above the floor, as do also the bottom edges of the bridge and back of the case, to permit of the ready introduction beneath the same of a broom in sweeping the floor.
The case or closure A is provided in its upper part with shelves for holding various kitchen articles or'utensils. The door or upper front portion, A, of the caseor closure A is hinged'at its lower edge to the upper edge of a cross-piece, between the side pieces, a a", of the case or closure A just above the drawers B B, permitting said door to swing or open outward To the outside of said door A is applied a hinged prop or board, B, which, when the door is position, is adapted to drop into the required position, abutting squarely against the board atone edge, the other edge of said prop resting against the inclined part of the partition b and drawers B B, and upon the angle or offset 1) and the offsets or ledges b 1) thereof.
' The board or prop portion or door, A, is lifted or carried to its upright position and past theperpeudicular, thus being caused to stand in or occupy an inward inclined position, will fold upon the door A and assume the appearance of a panel. At the same time both the door and prop will thus be held in place by gravity, dispensing with a catch or other means to secure the same in place against accidental displacement or falling. The board or prop B may be beveled upon or provided with a molding around its edges. by hinges are two leaves or additional shelves, C G, arranged thereon at a suitable 'height, the purpose of which is to hold any culinary article or utensil, or upon them may be set, in cooking at night or during dark, a lamp, 6 r they may be otherwise utilized. The shelves 0 C have each applied to the rear edge a strip or molding, c, which projects past the sides and a short distance along the back, and is arranged to extend underneath the stop or cleat (l, secured to the back of the case or closure A when the leaves or shelves are in their horizontal position. The strips or moldings c of the shelves or leaves 0, when the shelves or leaves are in their folded or vertical position, register with additional strips or Applied tothe sides of the caseA a fastened to and in lowered into a horizontal B, as the upper front moldings c 0' upon the'iback of easing A, thus uniting with the latter strips or moldings to provide the case or closure A upon its back at the side edges with molding, adding to the finieh and adornment thereof.
It will be observed that the offsets or ledges of the drawers B B serve also as handdiolds or drawer-pulls forthe convenient and ready handling of the drawers.
Having thus fully described my invention,
desire to secure by Letters said strips, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a kitchen-cabinet, the combination,
with a case provided wit-ha cleat across its back and with a molding along the lower part of its rear edges, of shelves hinged to the sides of the case and provided on their rear edges with rearwardly-projecting strips adapted to engage alternately the cleat and the molding, substantially as herein shown and described.
' 3. The herein-described kitchen-cabinet,
.eonsisting of dense provided with the cleat d andthe moldin c, the hinged front portion, A, the board B hinged to the front A and serving both as a prop and a pawl, and the shelves C, hinged to the sides of the case and provided with rearwardly-projecting strips for engaging alternately the eleat and molding, asspecified.
