UNITED STATES JAMES B. HOYT, OF
HORSE- TROY, XEXV YORK.
BOOT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 398,834, dated March 5, 1889.
Application filed June '7, 1888. Serial No. 278,297. No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Janus B. HOYT, of the city of Troy, county of Rensselaer, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Calking-Boots for Horses, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain improvements upon the calking boot for horses for which Letters Patent were granted to me October 4, 1887. This class of devices is made i to cover and protect the hoofs of animals from calking; and the object of my improvement is to better adapt these calking-boots for wear and for attachment and detachment.
Accompanying this specification, to form a t part of it, there is a sheet of drawings containing three figures illustrating my invention, with the same designation of parts by letter reference used in all of them. Of these illustrations, Figure 1 is a perspective of my improved calking-boot, with what is the front when worn turned toward the sight. Fig. 2 is another perspective of theboot with whatis the rear part turned toward the sight. Fig.
:1? of Fig. 1.
The several parts of the calking-boot thus illustrated are designated by letter-reference, and the function of the parts is described as follows:
The letter A designat the upper or body partof the boot, which is made of thin sheet steel or other similarly-elastic sheet metal, which is curved and drawn in at the top to nearly close around the ankle above the hoof, and therefrom is extended downwardly in a contour adapted to cover the front and sides of the hoof, leaving the back of the latter uncovered.
Theletter 71 designates slnnilders formed in the upper or body part, A, to adapt the latter to reston the upper part of the hoof where the latter extends rearwardly.
Instead of the beaded edge formed in the top of the upper or body part, A, as illustrated in my older patent before named, I construct the body herein shown without said bead, and insert within the said top an interiorly-placed lining of hard rubber or leather, as indicated at L, which is made to extend downwardly from the top of the body A a short distance, and upon the top of this lining I construct a bead, B, arranged to overlap the metal edge of the body and to outwardlysubtend the latter thereat.
The letter ll designates a hinged hasp that is attached to the body or upper A upon one side of its back opening, and this hasp has a slot, S, made in its outer end having an entering-eye, e.
The letter P designates a pin that is outwardly projected from the body part A at that side edge of the back opening in the latter which is opposite to that on which the hasp is placed, and the letter B designates a button-form head upon the pin P, so that when the boot is applied to the hoof and the sides of the back opening are drawn together the hinged hasp is passed down over the button B, by means of the eye 6 in the end of the slot S, so that the narrow part of the slot will engage with the button-head to keep the parts connected.
The ring L, where lining the interior of the boot body or upper near its top edge, in connection with its beaded top B, where outwardly subtending the top metal edge of the body, makes the boot more comfortable to the foot, and the substitution of the ring-L for the metal bead formed in the top of the sheet-metal body part makes the latter more elastic and easy of application. The substitution of the hinged hasp and pin for the slot and pin of the older method, though performing in reality the same oilice, enables the boot to be more easily attached and detached.
1 am well aware that my invention herein is limited to and only has novelty when considered as an. improvement upon the calkingboot for horses described in my older patent alluded to.
Having thus describml 111 y invention, whatl.
I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
In a calking-lmot, the combination, with 9 hoof at the front and sides, of the non-metallie ring L, made to line the interior of the upper or body part near its top and having the February, 1888, and in the presence of the two Witnesses Whose names are hereto Written.
JAMES B. HOYT.
