COMBINATION SHAVING UTENSIL.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 397,028, dated January 29, 1889.

lle it known that I, \VILLIAM SHAY, a citii zen of the United States,.and a resident of Ansonia, in the county of New llaven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Shaving Utensils; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved combination shaving utensil or apparatus. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is arepresentation of the apparatus as it appears when ready for use. Fig. 4 is a cross-section on line 00 00, Fig. 3; and Fig. 5 is aview showing the brush and cover detached from each other.

This invention has relation to shaving utensils; and it consists in the construction and combination of parts of the device or apparatus hereinafter more fully described and claimed, the same constituting in a single device or apparatus a combined hone, razorstrop, razoncase, shaving-Mush, soap-cup, and looking-glass.

On the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the foot or base of the apparatus, which is preftrrably of a circular shape, and provided with a raised rim or flange, B, having a female screw-thread on its inner side adapted to fit and engage the threaded tenon C, which projects downward from the square pillar D. The under side of the base is recessed to form a receptacle for a mirror or looking-glass, E, the back of which is provided with projecting spring-clip arms F, adapted to be clamped to the side of the pillar. \Vhcn the glass is not in use, it may be held in place in the recess of the pillar by its rim impingin tightly against the walls of the said recess. The pillar or body D is made hollow to form a receptacle, G, for one or more razors, and the four sides of the pillarare covered, in whole or in part, with leather l or other suitable material, which has been suitably prepared for the sharpening and polishing or stropping of razors. Upon one of the four sides of the pillar is suitably fastened a sharpening stone or hone, as shown at ll.

The recess in the body of the pillar is enlarged at its upper end to receive the soapcup I, which is permanently placed within the recess, and above the soap-cup the circular recess, which forms the receptacle for the cup, is threaded on its inner side to fit and engage the threaded cover J. The latter has a central screw-threaded perforation, K, into which may be screwed the threaded part L of the brush-handle M, the brush N of which projects down into the soap-cup when the cover is placed on the device. In other words, this threaded cover J forms a removable bushing for the brush-handle, from which it may be readily detached by unscrewing, as shown in Fig. 5.

\Vhen the device is not in use, the razor is placed within its receptacle in the pillar, and the latter is screwed upon its base which forms its support, the glass being placed within the recess in the bottom of the base, while the brush is screwed into the cover, which is again screwed in the top of the pillar, so as to cover and protect the soap-cup. \Vhen the device is to be used, the glass is first removed from the base and clamped to one of the four sides of the pillar, as shown in Fig. 3. The cover is then removed and unscrewed from the brush-handle, after which the apparatus is read y for use.

From the foregoing it will be seen that this forms a neat and convenient apparatus,which is especially useful for travelers, as it is al' ways ready and handy for use and occupies but little room when the several parts are placed together, as when the apparatus is not in use, while at the same time it requires only a few moments to detach the several parts and make the appaaatus ready for immediate use.

Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. The combination of the pillar, the recessed base having a central threaded aperture, and the mirror having clamping-arms adapted to engage the sides of the pillar and thereby hold the glass in position, as set forth.

2. The eolnhiimtion of the pillar having a recess a jlapted to hold one or more razors and provided with a threaded tenon at its lower end, the haste or support having a threaded flange fitiing the tenon ol the pillar, and the sharpening hone and strops fastened upon the sides of the pillar, substantially as set forth.

4.
