To all 'wkom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN W. RUGGABER', a citizen of the United States, residing at Racine, county of Racine, State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in and Relating to Finger-' Nail Polishers, of which the following is aspecification.
This invention relates to certain improvements 1n polishing apparatus; and the objects and nature of the invention will be readily understood by those skilled in the art in the light of the following explanatlon 'of the accompanying drawings illustrating what I now believe to be the preferred embodiment or mechanical expression of my invention. from among other forms, con- 'structions and arrangements within the spirit and scope thereof.
An object of the invention is to provide" a self contained motor driven exceedingly simple, compact, durable, and eflicient "polishing apparatus for quickly and thoroughly manicuring the finger nails and thereby avoiding the necessity of employing skilled operators for this purpose, and the tedious operation involved in performing this work by hand.
The invention consists in certain novel features in construction and in combinations and arrangements as more fully and par-- ticularly set forth and specified hereinafter.
Referring to the accompanying drawings: Figure 1, is a perspective view of the apparatus. Fig. 2, is a perspective view of the apparatus with the motor and its shaft and polishing tool removed. The apparatus consists of a motor ar ranged within and carried by a casing 5, and provided with a projecting rotary shaft 6, and a manicuring or polishing tool 7; and a base 1, cast or otherwise formed in one piece with an upright pedestal or post 2. for the motor'casing, and with an upright narrow box 3, for said tool, open at its front upper corner and forming a finger rest 4. to support a finger extending .across said opening and engaging said tool.

The pedestal 2, iscentrally arranged -near one end of the base and is concaved at its upper end to form a seat fitting the exterior of the preferablycylindrical motor casing. The motor casing is fixedly secured in this seat and down on the upper end of the pedestal,-in any suitable manner, as by a vertical bolt 9, passing up through the pedestal and into the casing and tightly clamping the same in a centered fixed position against the upper end of the pedestal, with the pedestal approximately centrally fitting the under side of the casing and with the casing arranged a comparatively short distance above the base and longitudinally thereof. The electricmotor is fixed in and inclosed by the casing which provides supporting bearings for the motor shaft 6. One end of said shaft projects beyond the casing toward the box- I end of this head is provided with a rim or tool seat 12, having a longitudinal threaded bore opening centrally through its vertical end face, and this rim 12 is joined to the body of the chuck or shaft extension by an annularly reduced neck 13.
' The tool 7 ,consist's of a circular fabric disk having its peripheral or rimportion formed by a comparatively soft mass 7, composed of approximately radially projecting threads so that the circumferential working surface of the disk is composed of a mass of thread or fiber ends. This device is provided with a central screw 14, havin its head at one side or' end of the disk slotted to receive a screw driver or like implement, with its threaded end. projecting from the opposite end or side of th e disk. This polishing tool is removably secured to the motor shaft to rotate therewith, by the screw entering the threaded bore so that when the screw is tightened the disk will be tightly clamped against the rim or seat 12, by the head of the screw arranged at the outer side or end of the disk. The direction of the thread of the screw is such that the rotation of the motor shaft and tool tend to maintain the tool tightly clamped to the tool seat. The box rises from the opposite end of the base from the motor supporting pedestal and in the example shown occupies the full width of the base and is formed with upwardly converging flat side walls and upwardly converging edge walls with the rear edge wall curving upwardly, forwardly and downwardly to close the top of the box. The upper portion of the inner side wall of the box is formed with a transverse round opening 16, of a diameter approximately equal to the diameter of the seat or rim 12, of the shaft extension so that said rim can slip therethrough when the parts are being assembled and disassembled. When assembled, the opening 16, is in line with the longitudinal axis of the motor shaft, and the seat or rim 12, is located just within the'box with the neck of said rim occupying opening 16.
The outer side wall of the'box is formed with a small opening 17 alined with the opening 16, and the longitudinal axis of the shaft, an the head of the tool clamping screwjs located opposite this opening 17 which is provided for the passage of a screw driver or other implement by which the-tool can be clamped to and released from the motor shaft.
The polishing tool occupies the upper portion of the interior of the box, and the upper .front corner of the box is provided with a comparatively small opening to expose a comparatively small portion of. the tool. This opening is located a distance forwardly from the vertical plane of the longitudinal axis of the tool, and also a distance above thehorizontal axis of said tool. The
side walls of the box are removed at said opening to provide said walls with downwardly and forwardly curving and transversely rounded edges 18, while the front wall terminates in a transverse straight imperforate bottom or floor plate 20, normally spanning said opening and overlapping the bottom face of the base, and clamped thereto by suitable means, such as the free upwardly pressing end of a plate spring 21, arranged longitudinally of the base, and atone end fixed to the under side thereof. This plate is preferably provided on its top face with a centering rib 22, to
fit up within the opening. The plate can be slipped longitudinally of the base over the free end of the spring to and from operative position, by grasping the outer edge of the plate which is exposed by a notch 23, at
the outer end of the base beyond the outer side wall of the box.
-with the transverse openings in the side walls of the box and is an effective aid toward rapid accurate assembling of the base and'motor. In assembling the parts, the shaft extension is secured on the motor shaft, and the motor casing is then positioned on the pedestal with the shaft extension extending through the orifice 16. The motor casing is then secured by the bolt 9, inserted up through the pedestal from the underside of the base. The manicuring tool is then placed in the box through the open bottom thereof and the end of the screw carrying said tool is started in the threaded bore of the shaft extension by manipulating said tool with the fingers inserted through the open bottom of the box and with a screw driver inserted through the orifice 17. When the screw end is inserted in said bore, the screw can be rotated by the screw driver extending through orifice 17, until the tool is tightly clamped against the end of the'shaft extension end. When the tool has thus'been secured, the bottom plate is slipped into place under the spring, to tightly close the bottom of the box.
When the circuit through the motor is closed, the tool is rapidly rotated in the box and the finger nails can be rapidly and safely cleaned and polished thereb by resting the finger on the top edge of t e box, in a position parallel with the axis of rotation of the tool, and rocking the finger back and forth to press the'nail into the soft thread circumference of the tool and release the sametherefrom as the heat caused by friction becomes too great. The formation of the box and its-opening permits this peculiar advantageous operation of the finger with safety.
The box collects and retains the lint and dust thrown off by the tool and the downward flaring formation of the box causes this dust and lint to settle to the bottom of the box and permits the easy removal thereof from the box when the bottom plate is removed.
The tool can be easily removed when worn, by inserting a screw driver through orifice 17, and unscrewing the tool supporting tool from the shaft end. The tool will then drop into the box and can be removed therefrom when the bottom plate is removed. A new or fresh tool can be easily applied and secured through the open end of the box, as hereinbefore described, and in fact difi'erent types of tools can be interchangeably employed by the one shaft. without disturbing any of the parts of the apparatus or the adjustment thereof, excepting the bottom plate.
The apparatus is small, compact and portable. In fact, the standard size is only approximately about five inches long, about three inches wide, and four inches high, more or less, although I do not wish to limit my invention to dimensions or to the particular rotary tool and purpose described.
/ It is evident that various changes, modifications and variations might be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I do not wish to limit myself to the exact disclosure hereof.
What I claim is 1. In combination, a base provided with a vertical hollow box open at the bottom through the base. a removable floor plate on the base for closing said open bottom of the box, a spring normally holding said plate in operative position, a motor casing car ried by the base, a rotary motor shaft carried by said casing and at one end projecting into said box through a transverse opening in the side wall of the box, a rotary. tool in the box and on said shaft end, said box having a front edge opening exposing a portion of the circumference of said disk and forming a finger rest.
2. In combination, a horizontally disposed base, a motor casing arranged above, fixed to and carried by the base, a horizontal rotary motor shaft carried by said casing and provided with a projecting end head, a removablerotary disk, a removable screw securing the disk to said head, a vertical hol-' low box rigid'with and rising from said base and spaced from said casing and having a perforation in one side wall receiving said head and an alined pe foration in the opposite side wall for the passage of a screw applying and removing tool to said screw, said'box having an opening of dimensions to permit passage of said disk into and from the interior of the box, and a removable closure for said opening, said disk on said head occupying the upper portion of the. in-
terior of said box, the upper front corner of the box being open and forming a finger rest and guard.
3. In combination, a base provided with a vertical hollow box open at the bottom through the base, a removable floor plate for closing said bottom opening of the box,
means for maintaining said plate in normal periphery of said disk.
4. In combinatiom-a base provided with a vertical hollow box having an opening for the insertion and removal of rotary polishing tools, a removable plate normally closing said opening, a spring normally hold-- ing said plate in operative position closing said opening, a motor casing carried by the base, a rotary motor shaft carried by said casing and at one end projectinginto said box through an orifice in the side wall thereof, and a rotary polishing tool in said box and removably secured on said shaft end, said box having a front edge opening exposing a portion of the periphery of said tool and forming a finger rest.
5. In combination, a horizontal base at 'one end provided with a permanent rigid hollow box rising from and extending across the base and having an orifice through its inner side wall and having its front upper corner open with the horizontal top edges of the front edge and opposite side walls of the box at said opening forming finger rests, a motor casing arranged above and longitudinally of said base and secured thereto and provided with a rotary motor shaft projecting into said orifice, and a rotary disk removably clamped to the end of the shaft and arranged within the upper end of said box, said box being provided with an opening of dimensions that permits passage. of said disk into and from'the interior .of the box, substantially as described.
