ABRAM ll. NIXON, OF DAYTON, OIIIO.
PUMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 396,504, dated January 22, 1889.
Application filed August 10, 1888. $erial No. 282,401. (No model.) i
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ABRAM H. NIXON, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have im'ented a certain new and useful Improvement in Pumps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in pumps; and it consists in the adaptation of a force and lift pump to the spraying of plants by supporting the same on a tripod, the special object being the preparation of a support which will be light, and therefore readily portable.
The features of the im'ention will be fully hereinafter set forth.
I attain the object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side View of the pump and its support with a portion cut away. Fig. 2 is a top view of the supporting-plate.
Like letters designate like parts in the several views.
As to the construction in the general features of the lift and force pump there is nothing novel, and the same comprises the cylinder or barrel B with flange, packing-nut at the top, and a screw-connection at the bottom of the same for the tubing G, and the air-chamber C, with a screw for the purpose of attaching the tubing, to which the sprayer is connected.
D is the piston, F the handle, and E the supporting-arm.
The flange of the pump-barrel (see Fig. 1 and B, dotted lines Fig. 2) is elongated and not an exact circle; and on the part extending to the right is a circular seat for the supporting-arm and a central orifice for the bolt part of said supporting-arm. The tripod-plate A has a central orifice for the cylindrical part of the pump, an orifice for the supportingarm bolt, and orifices for screws which engage threads in said tripod-plate, and these, with the bolt, which is an integral part of the supportingarm, unite the pump to said tripodplate. On the under side of the tripod-plate are three bosses set obliquely, into which are screwed the legs J. The leg J, on a line with the pump-handle, has an elongated foot. The operator places his foot on this part, thus holding the pump steady while the same is in operation. The tube G has a guarded strainer, I, attached to its lower end. This is ordinarily put into a bucket, the position of which is indicated by dotted lines at H. The special use of the pump thus mounted is for spraying Vegetation. The same may be carried from place to place, or the legs of the tripod may be secured to the bottom of the bed of a vehicle, and thus transported.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, 1s
The combination, with the pump-barrel B, having a flange, of the plate A, provided with legs upon which said flange rests and through which the said barrel extends, the standard E, secured upon the top of said flange by a threaded extension which passes through said flange and plate and is prox'ided with a nut beneath, and the plunger D and handle F therefor, said handle being pivoted to the top of said standard, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ABRAM H. NIXON.
