To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUDoLrH MUELLER, CItlZED of the United States, residing at Chicago, 1n the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and use fullmprovements in Syrup-Pumps; and 1 do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to makeand use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in syrup pumps for use at soda fountains, and has for its particular object to provide a pump of this character which is suspended from the cover of the syrup-containing receptacle, by means effecting a distribution of the strain due to depression of the syrup-ejecting or discharge plunger, over an area of the cover surrounding the axis 'of the pump barrel and piston rod, and in which all parts of the pump are easily accessible for purposes of cleansing and'repair.
The invention consists in the features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating a suitable embodiment of the invention:

The pump comprises the barrel 1 open at the top and provided with a removable bottom 2. Integral with the circumferential wall of the barrel is the discharge pipe 3 Which terminates contiguous to the lower end of said barrel. Spanning the upper end of the barrel is a bridge-piece d which is integral with the discharge pipe 3 and with a suspension rod 5 which is further connected with the discharge pipe 3 at intervals by means of cross-pieces 6 and a heavy head portion 7, more particularly shown in Fig.
-2. The said head 7 has a flat upper surface adapted to abut against the lower face of the'cover plate 8 of the syrup receptacle,
and is provided with a small annular flange 9 and a threaded'nipple 10 is integral with the discharge spout 11 of which it constitutes the base.
The fiange9 borders a threaded recess-12 inthe head 7 'inth'e bottom of which is concentric opening'for the 'passageof the piston rod 13 carrying the piston llat its lower end. The said piston-Tod 'i-sprovided wlth a threaded upper end portion 15 "which engagesin the heavy head portion 16 disposed within the concentric tube 17 partially housing the rod 13, said tube terminating at 1ts upper end in the knob 18 which is adapted to be depressed to force syrup from the barrel 1 through the discharge pipe 3 and spout 11. A helical compression spring 19 rests upon the bottom of the recess 12, and bears at its upper end upon the lower face of the head portion 16 for normally inamtalning the piston-rod 13 at the upper limit of its movement. The said spring'is partially housed by the tube 17, the latter being provided at its lower end with an annular flange 20 which engages the inner circumferential wall of a tube 21 threaded into said recess 12. The tube 21 is provided with an annular shoulder 22 which is adapted to bear upon the plate 23 for holding the latter down upon the cover-plate 8, and thus suspending the head 7 and parts carried thereby from said cover-plate. Such suspension is also partly effected by the nut 24 which is threaded on the nipple 10 and clamps the cover-plate 8 down upon the upper flat surface of the head 7, said nut being disposed below the plate 23. The latter is dished or provided with a peripheral flange which bears upon the cover-plate 8.
The upper end portion of the tube 21 is externally threaded to receive the internally threaded sleeve nut 25 which eonstitutesan adjustable stop for limitin the stroke of the piston-rod 13, said nut being provided at its upper end with an inwardly projecting annular flange 26 disposed in the path of the shoulder 27 at the lower end of the knob 18, and constituting a stop for the latter. The said nut 25 is provided with an annular smooth portion or apron 28 extending below the internal threads thereof for hiding the threads at the upper end of the tube 21 from view as said sleeve nut is turned to raise it to a higher elevation than shown in Fig. 2- for decreasing the stroke of the plunger 13.
From the foregoing description it will be apparent'that as'thepiston "rod 13 is de- "under the influence of the thrust exerted thereon. It will also be noted that all parts of the device, and especially those parts including the pump barrel, piston, pump plunger, discharge pipe and parts connected therewith, disposed within the receptacle below the cover-plate 8 are very easily accessible for purposes of cleansing; thus rendering the device very sanitary. This construction also enables me to cast the pump barrel and discharge pipe, bridge-piece 4i and suspension member 5, including the cross-bars 6 and head 7, all integral with one another of block-tin which is not subject to chemical reaction with the acids contained in the fruit syrups in which said parts are immersed or to the action of which they are subjected. It will further be seen that no metal except the block-tin, which may be used in the construction of the parts external of the receptacle covered by the coverplate 8 will become subject to the action of the syrups so that all chemical reaction tending to spoil such syrups and create poisons is obviated.
This construction also enables me to very easily mount the pump upon the cover-plate 8 and remove the same, and further enables me to make the entire structure very strong, durable and eiiicient, and at the same time of very elegant appearance as no threads are exposed to view, but only smooth polished or otherwise finished surfaces, and results in the employment of a minimum number of parts to effect all of the objects and functions of the device.
I claim as my invention:
1. A pump of the kind specified including a supporting plate having two openings, a head integral with the discharge pipe and delivery spout of the pump and from which the pump barrel is suspended provided with an internally threaded recess, a flange bordering the same to project into one of said openings, an externally threaded nipple at the base of said delivery saout aro'ectin l l l a through the other of said opemngs, a nut on said nipple for clamping said plate upon said head, a peripherally flanged plate. having two openings through one of which said delivery spout projects for covering said nut, a sleeve passing through the other openwith both said parts and joining the said pump barrelat points substantially equidistant from the vertical axis of said barrel, a supporting plate, and means constituting a part of the pump operating mechanism for securing said head to said supporting plate around the point at which said piston I rod passes through said head.
3. A pump of the kind specified including a barrel, a piston, a piston rod, a suspensionhead, a plurality of suspension members in cluding the discharge pipe integral withsaid barrel and said head and connected with the former at points equidistant from the axis thereof and from the axis'of said piston-rod, the latter passing through said head, a supporting plate for said suspension head, and a housing for a part of the piston-rod operatively engaged with said head and said supporting plate for securing the former to the latter around the point of passage of said piston-rod through said plate.
4. A pump of the kind specified including a barrel, a piston, apiston rod, a suspensionhead, a plurality of suspension members including the discharge pipe integral with said barrel and said head and connected with the former at points equidistant from the axis thereof and from'the axis of said piston-rod, the latter passing through said head, a plurality of horizontally disposed guide members connecting said suspension members and through which said piston rod passes, a supporting plate for said suspension head, and a housing for a part of the piston-rod operatively engaged with said head and said supporting plate for securing the former to the latter around the point of passage of said said plate concentric with said piston rod for securing the latter to saidplate.
6. A pump of the kind specified including a barrel, a piston and piston rod, the latter disposed axially of the barrel, a suspension 10 operatively engaging said plate over a surface of the latter surrounding said piston rod.
