SAW-CLAMPING DEVICE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 396,145, dated January 15, 1889.

.Be it known that I, ROBERT F. DARLING, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Seneca Falls, in the county of Seneca and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw Vises or Clamps, of whichthe following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in vises or clamps of the class usually employed for holding saws while the teeth are being sharpened. These vises have heretofore consisted of an inner or bench jaw provided with means for adapting the vise to be applied to a bench, table, or other fixed part with facility and of an outer movable or yielding jaw.

My principal purpose is to provide improved means for setting or clamping and freeing the jaws, so that the saw may be firmly clamped for being filed and easily released, either for changing the position of the saw or for removing it after it has been sharpened, and these results I aim to accomplish in a simple and inexpensive manner.

I have set forth the distinctive features of my invention in the claims hereunto appended; but to enable others skilled in the art more fully to' understand the same I will now proceed to describe my improvements with greater particularity, reference being had in so doing to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a front or side view of a sawvise embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same; Fig. 3, a like representation showing some modification in the means employed for the purpose referred to. Fig. 4 is a detail, the same being an end view, enlarged, of the upper portions of the vise. Fig. 5 is a detail showing another modification of constructiomand Fig. 6 is an enlarged representation showing one end of the vise, viewed from the front, when construct-ed as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and I.

A A represent vertically-arranged arms, upon the upper ends of which are horizontal extensions (0 a, constituting the jaws of the vise. These arms are united at their lower ends, but the jaws thereon are free or somewhat apart from each other, as shown. The

arm A is the inner or fixed arm and is pro vided with ears or lugs 79 b to admit of the vise being attached with facility and firmness to a bench or table. On the inner side orface of the outer arm, A, is a stud or horizontal extension, 0, recessed or cut out at its end to receive a pad or presser, d, made of rubber, leather, or other comparatively soft material, the purpose of which is, by bearing against the saw when the latter is confined in a vise, to

prevent or diminish the vibration of the saw while it is being filed, and thereby prevent or diminish the noise which might otherwise then be made. In practice I prefer to make all of the parts now referred to, excepting, of course, the pad (1, in one and the same piece of cast metal, having sufficient flexibility,

when made in the form shown, to permit the outer jaw to be compressed against the saw, and when released to spring sufficiently away from the saw to release it. Ordinary castiron will admit of this movement.

B B are studs or posts projecting vertically from the jaw a and arranged at or near its ends, and B B are oppositely-arranged studs or posts on the jaw 0. These studs or posts may be cast in one and the same part or piece with those parts of the vise already described.

0 O are arms or bars pivoted to the posts B B, and D D are levers having eccentric heads or ends 6 e and pivoted to the outer or free ends of the arms C C. It will be perceived, particularly on reference to Figs. 2 and 4, that the levers D'D, when lowered, will cause their eccentrics e e to bear against the outer jaw and force it to a greater or less extent, according to the position of the said levers, toward the inner jaw, so that a saw placed between the jaws will be firmly grasped and held for being filed. It will also be perceived that the saw may be readily released by raising the said levers, and that the vise is well adapted to saws varying from each other in thickness.

Having now shown and described the features of my invention and the means which I deem best for reducing it to practice, I desire to state that I do not here intend to restrict myself particularly to all of the details of construction so far referred to, for the construction may be somewhat varied, or even some parts omitted, without a material departure from the principle of my invention. For example, theposts l3 '3, instead of being vertical, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 4, maybe horizontal, as shown in Fig. 3, and a thumbsc1'ew,f, as shown in Fig. 5,1naybc employed instead of the eccentric-levers D I) with like result-s, although, as before stated, I preferto employ the eccentrics. Again, it is not absolutely essential, though preferable, to apply an auxiliary presser on the free ends of the arms C C, for those arms, as shown in Fig. 3, may be so formed as to perform the function of an eccentric, being curved, as there shown, to bear with greater or less force, according to their position, against either the outerjaw ot' the vise or against a pin, j", extemling from the ends thereof.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The saw-vise jaws A A a a, having thereon the recessed stud or extension 0, ar ranged for holding a pad agaii'ist the saw, all

made in one and the same ')iece, substantially as and for the purposes specified.

2. The saw-vise jaws A A (1/ d, haying thereon the extensions 13 ll, all made in one and the same piece, in combination with the pivoted arms 0 provided attheir free ends with movable or adjustable jaw-compressoi's, substantially as and for the purposes specified.

A saw rise or clamp in which thejaws and their supporting-arms are made in one and the same piece of cast metal, suiiiciently flexible to permit the jaws to be clamped upon and released from the saw, and in which the said single or unitary part is combined with one or more clamps for temporarily clamping the saw between the jaws, substantially as and for the IJIII'DOSPS specified.
