JOHNH. STUKE, OF BEARDSTOWN, ILLINOIS.
SAW-SET.
Specification of LettersPatent.
Patented; July 2, 1907.
limitation med February 17,1906. serial No. 301,651.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H.` STUKE, a citizen of the United States, residingy at Beardstown, in the county of Cass and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw-Sets, of which the following is a specification.A
My invention pertains to improvements in what are known as saw-setting tools of the plier type. Its object is to provide for the requisite tooth-setting operation with facility and effectiveness and to carry out these ends in a simple and ready manner.
Said invention therefore consists of certain structural features substantially as hereinafter fully disclosed and specifically pointed out by the claims.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention-Figures l and 2 are opposite side elevations thereof. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation of the same produced in the direction of the axis of the saw-blade clamping Wedge or jaw. Fig. 4 is also a sectional elevation thereof at right-angles to the plane of the aforesaid section. Fig. 5 is a like section as Fig. 3, produced on a different line.
In carrying out my invention. I employ what may be called arstationary jaw-member l having an integral or fixed arm or lever la, and a lever or pivoted arm lb fulcrumed upon or in the heel-end of the aforesaid member, a preferably flat-metal spring 2 being interposed between said arms or levers and exerting or delivering its pressure or action upon the pivoted arm or lever one end of said spring being suitably secured to the integral arm or lever.
A clamping wedge or jaw 3 is arranged within the jawmember l, the latter beingprovided for that purpose with an opening lC of a corresponding outline as that of the former and being a continuation or extension of a practically circular opening lc in said jaw-member, said openings both being accessible laterally through j each side thereof, the purpose of which will presently appear. Said clamping wedge or jaw 3 has passing therethrough, and is actuated as later described by a screw-threaded rod 4 also extending through, and guided by a corresponding passage 5 in the opposite end of the member l, and terminated in a fiat or plate-like portion 4fL provided with an angular or cam slot 4b receiving a pin or stud l1 projecting laterally from the upper end of the lever l". Said flat or plate-like portion 4a of the rod 4 works partially within a recess Ie of the jawmember l and is adapted to engage the end-wall thereof for controlling the movement of the rod 4 in one direction, saidcam-slot equipped portion 4f also lbeing let into a recess lI in one end of the l'ever lb and guided in its movement and held against lateral displacement thereby, as it is actuated by the stud or pin ld in partaking of the movement imparted thereto by the angular or cam-slot 4b receiving said stud or pin. Said clamping wedge or jaw 3 has its inclined surface presented .next to, and resting upon the correspondingly inclined or sloping surface of the laterally extended portion ln of the member l forming one wall of the opening lc and its opposite surface facing the other wall of said opening and which forms the face of the jaw-forming portion lg of said member, between which wedge and thelatter is clamped and held the saw-blade in performing the tooth-setting operation. Also, said wedge 3 is capable of adjustment upon its carrying rod or connection 4 and accordingly with relation to the face of the jaw-forming portion lg of the member l in accommodating the sawblade, by means of an internally screw-threaded sleeve or tubular nut 6 threaded or working upon a screwthreaded surface of said rod and adapted to actuate or move said wedge. To provide for effecting the latter,v said sleeve or nut has at that end, opposite its headed end, an annular shoulder or enlargement 6L let into, and adapted to turn in opposed horizontal slots 3l formed in the lateral Walls and at the inner end of a recess 3" provided in the outer or larger end of said wedge for the reception bodily of said sleeve or nut. The headed end of the tubular nut or sleeve G is suitably milled or serrated for its effective manipulation. i
A gage 7 for limiting or controlling the depth of insertion of the saw-blade between the jaw-forming portion lg and the wedge 3, and accordingly engaging, or constituting a stop for the end or top set, is applied to the part lg, it being right-angled in general outline. One arm of said gage has a longitudi nal slot 7lL and is equipped with a set or adjusting screw 7b working through said slot, in a threaded socket or aperture formed in one side of said part lg of the memfore noted, various sizes of teeth in effecting the settingl of the same.
An anvil or block 8 for the tooth, being set, having an inclined or sloping surface or face for imparting the requisite set or deflection to the tooth, is suitably arranged in an opening lh in the jaw-portion lg of the member 1, it being pivoted as at 8pb therein so as to provide for the requisite movement of the anvil in varying the set or deflection of the tooth. As contributory to that end a set or holding screw 8h is arranged to work in a bridge piece or bearing 8i suitably held in cleats 8c integral with the jaw-forming part lg of the member l, said screw also being adapted for forming an abutment for the block or anvil 8 when in use, as will be readily understood. i
A springcushioned and automatically retractable l setting pin or plunger 9, diagonally arranged for movei ment Within a corresponding passage li formed in the l inner end oi the member l, has its inner end adapted to engage the saw-tooth and the outer headed or enlarged end adapted to be engaged by an offset or lug l the suitable actuation oi the latter, is effective to force inward said plunger and cause it to engage or act upon the saw-tooth in performing the setting operation, as is apparent.
It is thought that the foregoing is clearly and fully suggestive of the use and operation of the invention, it being noted, however, that, with the saw-blade in position as aforesaid, and the grasping and actuating of the lever lb, the saw-blade Will be suitably gripped or clamped and held in position While the suitable setting of the tooth is successively effected, all thus being performed by a single or continuous operation and Without any subsequent or additional manipulation of parts.
integral With the lever l and which lug or offset, by
I claiml. A saw-set of the plier-type, comprising a handled sfationary jaw-member, an anvil. a plunger and a clamping wedge operatively arranged in said jawauemher, and said plunger-*opposed to said anvil, a lever pivoted in said jawmember and effective to actuate said plunger, means of connection between said wedge or clamp and .said lever, and a pin and cam-slot connection between said lever and the aforesaid connecting means.
2. A saw-set of the plier-type, comprising` a handled stationary jawancmher, an anvil, a plunger and a clampingr wedge operatively arranged in said jaw-member, and said plunger opposed io said anvil, a lever pivoted in said jaw member and effective to actuate said plunger and equipped with a lateral pin, and a rod adjustably connected lo said wedge and havingl a plate-like terminal provided with a cam-slot engaged h v said lateral pin of said lever.
In testimony whereof I have signed in v name to this specification in the presence of two .saihscrihinal witnesses.
