G. BOWER.
FURNITURE DRAWER,
No. 395,419. Patented Jan. 1, 1889 N. PETERS, Pholn-Lilhogripher. washings. n.c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE BOVER, OE FAYETTE, MISSOURI.
FURNITURE-DRAWER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 395,419, dated January 1, 1889.
Application filed June 28, 1888 Serial No. 278,386. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE BowER, of Fayette, in the county of Howard and State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Fui'niture-Drawer, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to an improvement in drawers for furniture, and has for its obj ect to provide a furniture-drawer constructed with a guide device, whereby the drawer may be moved in and out of the casing in an easy and effective manner without sticking.
The invention consists in a furnituredrawer constructed and arranged as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accoinpanyin drawings, forming a part of this speci lication, in. which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a front view of the upper portion of a case of drawers. Fig. 2 is a horizon tal section thereof on the line (I? a, Fig. 1, showing a drawer constructed in accordance with this invention, and Fig. 3 is a vertical section thereof on the line y 1 Fig. 1.
In carrying out this invention, a roller, 1, is mounted in brackets 2 on the back of a drawer, 3, adjacent to its top, and about the ends at of the roller projecting into the space 5 on each side of the casing 6 are wound, with four to eight turns, cords 7 with the center coil of cord fastened to the roller, the cords being secured at one end to the rear of the casing 6 and at the other end to tighteningpins 8, mounted at the front of the casing on the inside, the cords extending at the sides of the drawer 3 from front to rear. Instead of securing the ends of cords 7 to pins 8, they may be secured to casing, if desired. By
means of this construction the drawer 3, when moved in and out of the casing on the strips 9, will be guided in a straight line by the ends of the roller 1 moving on the cords 7 and revolved thereby, and there will be no oppoitunit for the drawer to bind or stick in the casing in its movement. The drawer may be easily pulled out by one of its handles. To take up the slack of the cords 7 when they become loose, it is only necessary to tighten them by turning the pins 8, the latter preferably being formed with square heads 10, adapted to be held and turned by a suitable key or wrench. The cords 7 may be formed of wire, if preferred, and the form of the parts varied from the construction herein set forth, without departing from the essential features of the invention.
Having thus described my invent ion, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination, with a casing and a sliding drawer, of a roller journaled on the rear of the drawer, below the upper edge thereof, and having its ends projecting beyou d the ends of the drawer, and cords wound on the projecting ends of the said roller and having their ends secured to the front and rear of the casing, snl'lstantially as described.
2. The combination, with a casing and a drawersliding therein, of brackets secured to the back of the sliding drawer, a roller journaled in the said brackets below the upper edge of the back of the drawer and having its ends projecting beyond the ends of the drawer, cords wound on the projecting ends of the roller and having one end connected to the rear of the casing, and adjustable pins secured to the front of the casing, and to which the other ends of the said cords are secured, substantially as herein shown and described.
GEORGE BO\VER.
