RING- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Application filed April 22, 1903.

Be it known that I, BERTRAM LENZEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ring-Trays, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of ringtrays which comprise spring-actuated lockingstrips, and is designed to overcome some of the disadvantages characteristic to structures of this class. The ordinary tray of this type is shown in a former patent to me, No. 710,475. In such a structure it is found that the warping of the iioor and contraction of the metallic locking-strips tend in time to displace the latter from their channels. The use of a long transverse coiled spring for tensioning the transverse strips induces such an unequal strain that the strips do not always perform their functions.
To the elimination of the above defects and to secure additional facility of action my invention is primarily directed.
In the drawings herewith, wherein like reference-letters indicate like parts, Figure lis a plan View of my improved tray with a number of the cushion-strips removed; Fig. 2, a vertical transverse section of the tray on line a: :c of Fig. l, and Fig. 3 a similar section ofA the same on line g/ y of Fig. 1.
My tray consists of a rectangular body A, with upright walls a. The door thereof has parallel channels b, in which slide metallic locking-strips B, shorter than the width of the tray, to allow longitudinal movement therein of the lockingstrips, whose outer ends traverse the front wall of the box and form handles d. Projections e upon the locking-strips near the inner face of the front wall prevent excessive outward movement of the strips. Each of the dat metallic lockingstrips B is provided with a series of prongs f, whose points arel directed toward the 4handles d. One or more retaining-strips w, fixed in the tray-bottom by pins o orpfgil means and transversely disposed in relati to the lockingstrips,retain the latter in their respective channels.

t', with intermediate spaces j to receive the rings 7c, rest upon the bottom of thebox at right angles to the direction of the lockingstrips. These bars are transversely traversed by channels Zin their lower faces to allow passage therethrough of the prongs f when the locking-strip is operated.
A length of spring-wire is looped at its center to form spring-arms h, and the looped portion is fixed to the door of the tray near 6o its back and intermediate the channels b by pins or screws o. As these spring-arms are intended to tension the locking-strips, the latter are provided at their rear with rearwardly-directed hooks m, each of which engages an arm h.
The operation of my device is as follows: When it is desired to insert or withdraw a ring, the locking-strip whose prong corresponds with the ring is pressed rearwardly 7o against the tension of the arm h.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. In a ring-tray, the combination with the floor of locking-strips provided with engaging prongs and slidably mounted in the ioor, a series of contiguous bars above and disposed at right angles to the locking-strips, posts in `the floor intermediate the lockingstrips, 8o lspring-arms upon the posts adapted to longitudinally tension the lockingstrips, and means upon the locking-strips for engaging the spring-arms as described.
2. In a ring-tray, the combination with the l iioor of channels in the floor, slidable locking strips provided with prongs and resting in the channels, a transverse strip fixed to the floor and above the locking-strips for retaining the latter in their channels, parallel con- 9o tiguous bars above and at right angles to the locking-strips,stoppins on the locking-strips, and spring means upon the floor adapted to force the locking-strips outward as described.
