PLATEN VFOR HOLDING SlCKLE-SECTIONS DURING TEMPERING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 395,164, dated December 25, 1888.
Application filed April 14, 1888. Serial No. 270,642. (No model.)

Be it known that I, FRANCIS MEYER, of the city of Auburn, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Platens :for Holding Sickle-Sections During Tempering, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure l is a perspective view of myinvention. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same; Fig. 3, a sectional View on the line X X of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 011e ot' the sections.
In tempering sickle-sections it importantI to bring the edges of the sections to a uniform tempering heat for such distance inward as it is necessary to have the temper extend and to keep the central portion cool, and thereby leave it soft or untempered.
To this end I construct a platen, A, of lirebrick or other refractory material, which is placed over the fire. This platen is provided with apertures a a, through which the heat can play upon the sickle-section which is laid Upon the upper surface of the platen A, I place the curved deflectors c c. These are made of refractory material, and may either be constructed integrally with the platen A or they may be separate and suitably secured thereupon. The only material thing in their construction and operation is that they shall be so curved over upon the apertures d a of the platen as to direct that portion of the fire which escapes past the edges of the section over upon the upper surface thereof.
By the use of this apparatus the upper surw face of the section is heated about as fast as the lower. The edge to be tempered is brought to a uniform heat for a considerable width, and the center of the section is kept cool and soft.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The platen A, having the hre-apertures an extending through it and provided with the recurved or deflected flanges c c over said apertures, substantially as described.
