To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES B. BRANSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lincoln, in the county of Lancaster and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful improvement in the constructive designs of face-plates used for the purpose of covering openings in air-registers and ventilators through which air passes.
The object of my invention is to provide a device or face plate to cover the opening in air registers and ventilation shafts which will permit a maximum quantity of air to pass through, with the minimum of resistance, friction and heat absorption. It is further my object to increase the strength of the device while minimizing the surface area occupied by its elements. I attain the object of my invention by the mechanical construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical section of the'invention;

Referring to the accompanying drawings, I provide a suitable frame 1 having any desired arrangement or configuration of bars. Each "of these bars comprises a face 4 and rearwardly tapering sides 2 and 3, as illustrated in Figs: 1 and 2. The bars may be curved, as shown in Fig. 5, but retain the same shape in cross section- In case of the application of the invention to an intake, it is understood that these bars will be disposed in a reverse .position.
Referring to Figs. 3 and 4, I may provide a modified form of bars having one of the sides 6 disposed at right angle to the face 4- 0f the bar and having the opposed side 5 tapering to meet the face 6. This, construction would be largely employed in side wall face plates, to offer the least resistance to the passage of a current of heated air, in particular, in view of the tendency of hot air to rise.
In operation a sharp edge 7 is presented to the air current, diverting it to the tapering sides 2 and 3 (or'5 and 6) with little deflection, resistance or friction. With this improved construction the bars may be spaced farther from each other as the necessary strength is obtained by the increased depth of the bar instead of by a wider face surface as in prior constructions. An important advantage is thus obtained by decreasing the obstruction to the flow of the air current.
Practically all face plates in use present a very much flattened rear surface which opposes the entrance of air, thus creating resistance and friction and an undesirable loss of heat, which result is largely overcome by the peculiar shape of the bars disclosed in my application. In each of the forms disclosed a sharp edge 7 is presented to the air current, diverting it to the side with little deflection, resistance or friction.
The invention is applicable to all face plate constructions for air registers and ventilators and involves little or no extra expense for manufacture.
I am aware that plates have heretofore been devised with bars of various irregular shapes in cross section, but these devices do not attain the advantages of the construction I have illustrated; nor do the patents covering these devices suggest the possibility of making a modification of the shape or constructive design of the face lates for the purpose of minimizing their 0 struction to the air passing through the registers or ventilators; nor as the result attained by applicants device been understood or recorded by prior inventors, so far as he is aware.
What I claim is:
