ALBERT R. YOUNG, OF GREEN SPRING, OHIO.
BURIAL APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 394,947', dated December 18,18'88. Application tiled July 3l, 1888i Serial No. 281,587. (No model.)
T0 @ZZ wiz/0m t may concern.-
Ee it known that I, ALBERT R. YOUNG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Green Spring', in the county of Seneca and State of Ohio, have invented an Improved Burial Ap paratus; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making part of this speciiication.
rlhe drawing represents a perspective view of the entire apparatus.
My invention consists of an improved apparatus, substantially as represented in the drawing' and hereinafter described and claimed, by which coffins and burial-cases may be let downinto graves with celcrity, ease, and without noise. Another feature of its construction is that it is readily taken apart and packed compactly for moving about and then readily and quickly pu t together again when it is to be used.
The main parts of the apparatus are a base o r frame on which the other parts are mounted, rails forming a short track mounted on the base, a truck running on the track and adapted to receive 'lhc coffin or burial-case, a derrick or stand mounted on the base, a tackle and block mounted on the derrlck by which the coffin or lnirial-case islowered into the grave, and a windlass and crank by which the rope of the tackle is wound up or unwound to lower the coffin or b urial-case or to lift the same. I design to make these parts all in the simplest form, and I have shown such a construction in the drawing.
As represented, the base or frame is simply composed of two bottom timbers or small beams, A A, which are io rest parallel with cach other on the ground beside a grave, and two cross timbers orbeams, B B,restingeross wise upon the timbers A A and secured remova-bly thereto by removable bolts a o; also, upon the lower timbers, A A, crosswise of the same and inside of the timbers B B, are placed two rails, C t', to Vforni a track on which the truck is to rnn. These tracks may be Isimple wooden timbers secured in position removably on the timbers A A by removable bolts h l). The rails extend considerablybeyond the base-frame at one end, as shown, so that the truck maybe run out from under the derrick and from over the grave for convenience in placing' the coffin or burial-case thereon.
The truck maybe made in very simple form. It is shown as composed of two blocks or headpieces, I) D, in each of which two truckwheels, E E, have their bearings, the two blocks being connected by one or more bars or timbers, G, of the proper length to give the proper gage to the truck-wheels to run on the rails of the track. The cross bar or bars are or may be removably secured to the blocks of the truck, so that the truck may be taken apart for compactly packing with the other parts of the apparatus.
The dei'rick-standards II I-I are of skeleton form, so as to be light as well as strong and firm. rlhus the simplest form of the standards, as shown at the left hand in the drawing, is composed of four upright strips, c c 'an d d d, the former being parallel and placed near together, and the latter inclined, so as to make the standard wide at the bottom and narrow at the top, where all the strips are brought close together. A sufficient number of horizontal cross-strips fff connect the upright strips. 'lwo middle and parallel upright strips, z c, are used in order to divide the whole upright into two parts longitudinally and provide for hinging and folding these parts'togeiher. ,lo this end the cross-strips fff are severed in the middle on a central lin e between the strips c c, and (preferablyv strap) hinges are attached to the cross-strips, by which the two parts are 'folded together. These hinges it/ g are shown on the right-hand upright, which is constructed in the same way as the other upright, except that it is slightly modified for attaching' the frame of the windlass I) thereto. For this purpose the two middle parallel upright strips are separated snliiciently to admit the indiass-frame between them, as shown. Addition al short upright strips, c c', close together, are or may be applied at the upper end of the upright, as shown, to give the proper form at the tops, as in the other upright. Each upright is mounted on one of the cross-timbers B of the base, and held thereon by the lower ends of the upright strips entering in mortises or sockets in the basetimbers or otherwise, so that the uprights are readily removable lfrom the base-timbers.
The cross-beam .l of the d errick rests upon IOO bhe upper ends ol' ihe two uprights, which ierninaie in tenons or equivalent forms, iii'iin in moriiSeS ini'he Cross-benin. Two bri'iees, li K, reueh from. the npr his to iphe cross-beam, as Shown, being secured io ihe respeeiive paris at the two endo` by simple pins or bolts /1` h, which erin be readily drawn oui'` for removing ihe brnees4 sind taking' ihe apparatus ail'lziri.
'lhe lowering-mel(le is ol' ihe .simplest eousirueiion. Two pulley-sheaves, i 1', nre mounted side by Side in ihe middle oi the crossbezun, :uid a rhird shoavcgj, is mounted in one ond, over wh ieh ihe i'ziekle-riiljie L passes io ihe wiudlzlse. There muy he more than one strop N'.
