Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS GARRICK, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
IMPROVED SPUR FOR HORSEMENS USE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 39,477, dated August 11, 1S63.
T0 all whom t may concern,.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS GARRTCK, of the city and county ot' Providence, in the State ot' Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Spurs for Horsemens Use; and I do hereby declare that the following` specification, taken in connection with the drawings, making a part ofthe same, is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
Figure 1 represents a boot with my improved spur attached. Fig. 2 is a View of the spur it zelf.
The object of myimprovexnent is to produce spurwhich will fit equally Well a boot-heel of any size, and which can be rmly attached Without the use of straps.
A is the shank of the spur, of any shape or length which may be desirable. D is a fixed screw which forms the end of the shank, and
is intended to be screwed into the heel of the boot. B is a clamp, having a spur-projection, a, at each of its four corners. This clamp turns freely on the shank of the screw D, and is prevented from moving in any other direction by a shoulder in the shank of the spur on one side and by a collett, C, on the other. When the spur is to be afxed to the boot, a suitable hole is r'st bored in the heel of the boot, and thepoint of the screw D inserted. By turning the shank around the clamp will be drawn against the heel and the projecting points a a be buried in the leather sufficiently far to hold the clamp from turning, and afford a irm hold and support for the shank. When the spur is removed, the only change in the appearance ofthe boot is the hole in the heel, which may be made so small as to be scarcely perceptible. In this Way I am able to produce a spur which can, without inconvenience, be carried in the pocket, and which .can be attached to or removed from the boot in a few seconds. The ett'ect of the clamp B is not only to furnish a support tothe spur When attached to the boot, but is also intended to compress together the lifts ot' leather, which t'orm the heel, and thereby afford a better hold for the threads of the screw D.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The improved spur for horsemens use described, consisting of a spur with a screwshank, D, and a compressing and supporting clamp, B, provided With the spur-points a a a, or their equivalents, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
