Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MCGLINTOOK YOUNG, JR., OF FREDERICK, MARYLAND.
HEEL-SPUR.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 27,019, dated January 31, 1860.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MoOLINTooK YOUNG, J r., of the city and county of Frederick and State of Maryland, have invented a new and Improved Equestrian Heel-Spur; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, in which- Figure l, is a top view of said spur, and Fig. 2, is a section thereof in the line y, y, of F ig. 1.
The main portion a, of the frame of my improved heel-spur is of such a forni that it will freely pass on to the heel of a boot or shoe; and the upwardly inclining hollowT arm ZJ, which projects from the curved side of said spur-frame, is of such a shape that it will receive the screw-shank d, of the slitted head 7c, which receives within its slit the toothed spur-head e, that is combined therewith by means of a transverse pivot-pin.
The inner surface of the straight side of the spur-frame a, is armed with sharp teeth L, 7L, and the inner end of the screw-shank d, is brought to a sharp point, as shown in the drawings; consequently, when my improved spur is placed upon the heel of a boot or shoe, a few turns of the screw-shank al, Will force the said points into the front and back sides of said heel, and securely hold the spur upon the same.
The nut f, which is placed upon the screwshank el, enables the said shank to be securely retained in its position, after its point has been screwed into the heel of a boot or shoe with the proper degree of force.
The loop o, on the upper side of the arm b, of the spur-fra1ne, is intended to receive ay thong g, or any other suitable string or cord which may be secured around the ankle of the person wearing the spur, as an additional security aga-inst losing ,the same, when the spur may be subjected to unusually rough usage.
All danger of accidental separation of the screw-shank d, from the arm b, of the frame Aof the spur, may be prevented by passing a pin z', through an aperture near the inner end of said screwshank, as shown in Fig. 2.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
My improved equestrian heelspur; the said spur being formed essentially of the heelsshaped open frame a, and its projecting hollow arm Z), combined with the slit-headed screw-shank d, and its rotating spur-head e, substantially as herein set forth.
The above speciiication of my improved heel-spur, signed this 8th day of Deer. 1859.
