Description

Nrrnn STATES PATENT' Orr-ICEj JAMES FENN ING, OF DANBURY, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND JAMES S. TAYLOR, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVED COASTlNG-GUARD FOR BOOTS AND SHOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 36.123, dated August 5, 1862.
To all whom it may concern:
Be 'it known that I, JAMEs FENNING, of Danbury, Connecticut, have invented new and useful Coasting Guards or Adjustable Metallic Tips and Heels for Boots and Shoes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in making adjustable metallic tips and heels for the protection of shoes. i
In the drawing, A is the metallic tip; B, the metallic heel or heel-guard; C, the metallic strap Or clamp connecting the tip and heel, and serving to protect the sides of the shoe. D is a leather strap and buckle for securing the invention to the shoe. The several pieces A B C are formed each of a single piece of metal, (which may be stamped Out,) and are of a shape to vsuit the shoe to be protected, as is clearly shown in the drawing. My invention is especially adapted to the preservation of the boots and shoes of children while engaged in the sport well-known as coasting, for without something for this purpose a pair of shoes or boots will wear out in a few days,
since they use either their toes or heels for steering their course while coasting down the hill of ice or snow. The under surface of the tip and heel is provided with sharp points for taking a good hold on the ice. I may find it desirable to use only the tip A. I then dispense with heel-guard B, and pass the strap D back of the heel; or I may Wish to use only the heel-guard B. I then dispense with the tip A, and pass the strap D over the instep. I contemplate manufacturing adjustable metallic tips and heels, so as to protect either toes or heel, or both at the same time.
Havingthus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The use Of adjustable metallic tips and heels for the protection of boots and shoes when constructed and operating in the manner and for the purposes herein speciiied.
In testimony that I claim the above I hereunto set my hand and seal this 16th day of June, 1862.
JAMES FENN ING. [L s] In` presence of- LAURA HAMILTON, DAVID B. BOOTH.
