EDIVIN REYNOLDS, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
CASE FOR HOLDING AND PRESENTING TRAYS OR BOXES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 394,210, dated December 11, 1888.
Application filed September 1, 1887- Serial No. 248,559. (Modelfl Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists in the improved combination of a holding-receptacle, with a case which is made in two parts and is opened by movement in a horizontal plane to present the holding-receptacle, as hereinafter fully set forth.
Figure] is a perspective view of my invention as adapted for the purpose of an ink-pad, showing the holding-case in its opened condition, one of the shelves being broken away to show the lever construction for guiding the ink-pad box. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the case in its open condition wit-h the inkpad box removed. Fig. 3 is a similar section of the case in its closed condition without the ink-pad box. Fig. 4 is a vertical section taken transversely tl'irough the ink-pad box, showing a guiding-groove in the bottom of the same.
In the accompanying drawings, A A are the two equal parts of the case, which are joined to each other by means of suitable hinges, u. The parts A A are each provided interiorly with the shelves b Z). The ink-pad box B, having a cover, 0, which caused to open by means of the sprin d, is fastened to the platform C in any suitable manner, the said platform being pivoted at the hinge-joint a, so that upon closing the case A A the platform C will be drawn within it, as shown in Fig. 3.
In order that the platform C may be held central of the case during the opening or closing movement of the same, I make a slot, 6, in the platform. The stud D enters the enenlarged opening e in the slot 2, so that the shank of the stud will be embraced by the edges of said slot. Under the head f of the stud are attached or pivoted the levers E E, which are also pivoted to the rearward corner, 72, of the parts A A of the case, thus constituting a parallel motion for keeping the platform C in proper relative position with the opening and closing parts of the case. The levers E E and platform C are supported by means of thin bottoms F, each having a proj eetin g semicircular front. These bottoms are attached, respectively, to each of the parts A A of the case, and are arranged so that in closin the case one of the said projecting bottoms F will pass over the other. hen the case is being closed, the shelves 1) b, which press against the top surface of the cover 0, will cause the said cover to be closed upon the ink-pad g in opposition to the action of the spring (I, and when the case A A is completely closed the cover 0 will be closed upon the ink-pad g. Upon opening the case A A the said cover will be thrown back automatically to the position shown in Fig. 1.
Instead of a receptacle having a cover, an open receptacle may be employed, as shown in Fig. at, and the platform C may itself form the bottom of the l1olding-receptacle. The receptacle B, with its cover, may extend for the full height of the inner chamber of the case, so that the top of the case will serve to act upon the spring-operated cover to close the same upon the closing movement of the case. \Vhen the shelves are used, the portion of'the case above the shelves b Z) may be used for the reception of various articles, and in the case of the ink-pad shown in the drawings the space above the shelves 1) b can be used for the reception of the rubber stamps to be employed with the pad.
I claim as my in vention- 1. The combination, with the case made in two parts hinged to each other, and the receptacle provided with a slotted platform and pivoted to the case at the line of the hingejoint, of the levers pivoted to the rear corners of the two parts of the case and to a stud which operates in the slot to hold the receptacle in true line with the case in the opening and closing movement, substantially as described.
The combination, with the case made in two parts hinged to each other, and the receptacle provided with a spring-operated cover and with a slotted platform and pivoted to the case at the line of the hinge-joint, of the levers pivoted to the rear corners of the two IO joint, of the levers pivoted to the rear corners 1 of the two parts or the case and to a stud which operates in the slot to hold the receptacle in true line with the ease in the opening and closing movement, substantially as de scribed.
EDXVIN REYNOLDS.
