WITNESSES:
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK DECK, OF BROOKLYN, NEWv YORK, ASSIG'NOR TO PRAHAR & SHEPARD, CF SAME PLACE.
ALBUM-CLASP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 393,889, dated December 4, 1888.
Application filed September 14, 1888. Serial No. 285,388. (No model.)
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be, it known that I, FREDERICK DECK, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Album-Clasp, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple, Convenient, and ornamental clasp for albums, books, &c.
The invention consists, essentially, of a box, casing, or pocket hinged to one cover of the album or book, and of a plate entering the pocket provided with a threaded tongue engaging a milled nut in a through-opening in the walls of the pocket, which plate is provided with an aperture for engaging a stud on the other cover of the album or book, as will be hereinafter more specifically set forth and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,
`in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure I is a plan view of my new albumclasp, the front edge of au album being shown in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a central section of the same on the line a: x of Fig. l, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the plate.
The casing or pocket A is hinged to a clamp, B, adapted for attachment to one' by cutting away the body of the plate each side of the tongue, as shown at f, leaving the guides f The sides of the plate E, from a short distance above the base of the tongue E to the outer vend of the plate,.are cut away to form the shoulders g. The outer end of the plate is provided with an aperture,G, to receive the stud H on the other cover of the album. The outer end of plate E is rounded or otherwise ornamentally finished.
The plate E is entered within the pocket A until the tongue F is brought into engagement with the nut D, which has been placed in the opening vformed by the slots C. By
then turning the nut the plate can be drawn within the pocket, so that the aperture G is just beyond the outer edge of the pocket. Pins h are then passed through holes in the outer corners of the pocket and secured therein, which pins form stops, which, by engagement therewith of the shoulders g, pre vent the entire withdrawal of the plate and the disengagement of the nut D from the tongue F. In this position the clasp can be engaged with the stud I-I, and will hold an empty album tightly closed. As the thickness of the album is Vincreased in use, by turning the nut D the plate E can be eX- tended, thereby lengthening the clasp.
It is evident that the stop for the plate E might be a pin engaging a slot in the plate or other equivalent device, and I do not limit myself in this respect, nor to the exact construction shown and described, as the same Inay be varied within the scope of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination, in an album clasp, with a pocket provided with a transverse opening, of a plate having a tongue threaded continuouslyin one direction, and a nut similarly threaded located in the opening of the pocket and engaging said tongue, substantially as set forth.
2. In a clasp for albums or books, the combination, with a pocket provided with a transverse opening and a nut located in said opening, of a plate having a threaded tongue engaging said nut, and a stop for the plate, substantially as set fort-h.
3. As an improved article of manufacture, an album-clasp consisting of the pocket A, having slots C, nut D, and plate E, having' threaded tongue F and aperture G, combined for operation substantially as set forth.
el. The combination, with the clasp B and the pocket A, hinged to said clasp and having`
