E. FITCH.
CABINET FOR TYPE WRITING MACHINES.
Patented Nov. 20, 1888.
UNITED VSTATES PATENT EEicE.,
EUGENE FITCH, OF DES MOINES, IOVA.
CABINET FOR TYPE-WRITING MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0.393,225, dated November 20, 1888.
Application filed April Q-l, 188B.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, EUGENE FrrcII, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Des Moines, Polk county, State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cabinets for Type -Writing Machines, ol which the following is a specification.
The cabinet or case forming the subjectmatter of this application is designed to act as .r3 a table or support for a type-writing machine,
holding the same in convenient operative position, and to inclose the machine when out of use without changing the direction ofthe plane of the support or removing the machine therefrom.
'Ihe cabinet occupies but little space, having an internal transverse area sufficient only to accommodate the machine, which rests on a shell' or bracket proj ecting from the front, said 2o front being provided with central vertical pivots, upon which it is free to be rotated asemirevolution, carrying the machine with it from the inside of the cabinet to the outside thereof. One of the sides is hinged to the back, allowing it to be opened to permit of the rotation of the front and machine, and said side, when closed securely, holds the front both in its closed and opened positions; but to more fully describe my invention I will refer to the Aaecompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my imfprovcd cabinet open, showing the machine held by it in position for use. Fig. 2is a plan view with the top of the cabinet removed,
and Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the cabinet closed.
The cabinet is rectangular in form and contains two compartments-an upper one, constituting the case for the type-writing ma- 4o chine, and a lower one, containing drawers for holding paper, &c. The sides a andb are rigidly secured to the top c, and extend down so as to cover two sides of the compartment occupied by the drawers d el c c', the third side or front, f, of this compartment being rigidly secured, the horizontal partition g dividing the two compartments and forming the bottom of the upper compartment or cupboard. The front 71J of the upper compartment is centrally pivoted at 7L l to the top c and parti- Serial No. 271,742. (No model.)
tion g, and is provided with the bracketshelf t' ri', on which the type writing machine j (shown by dotted lines) is placed. The side or door 7c is hinged to therear side, c, and has on its free edge a strip, Z, which sets behind the strip m on the pivoted front 71J when the front h is turned around to bring the machine j, carried by it, into operative position,as shown at Fig. 2, thereby holding the front rigidly in its open position, it being prevented from turning away -from door 7a by the strip n on its other edge bearing against the strip o, secured to the edge of the side b.
When the front 7L is turned on its pivots h h2 to bring the bracket i and machine j thereon into the cabinet, the strip m on its edge rests against the inside ol' the strip 0 on the side b, and the strip Z of the door 7i: covers the strip a on the lront h, as clearly shown at Fig. 3, thus securely holding the front h in closed position. A spring bolt or lock may be put on the door, as in ordinary furniture, to provide a means for securing the door when closed.
It will be observed that the type-writing machine is always maintained in a vertical position, all that is necessary to do to bring it into operative position being to open the door k and swing the front h around on its pivot, the machine j then being in convenient position for use in front of the cabinet. Ready access may be had by the operator to the contents of the drawers d d' c e without moving from a seat in front of the machine j.
Having now described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a typc-writing -machine cabinet, in combination, two fixed sides and top and bottom of a cupboard, a centrally vertically pivoted front side provided with a bracket-shelf, and a hinged side which, when open, permits the front to be rotated, and arranged to act as a stop thereto when closed.
2. A type-writingmaehine cabinet compris` ing the ('ollowi'ug elements in combination: a cupboard having the top, bottoni, one side, and rear side fixed, a side hinged to the rear side having a right angle strip on its free edge, a front side provided with central verti- IOO cal pivots and strips on its edges, and a bracketshelf secured to the front side.
3. In a cabinet, iu combination, the cupboard a b c g, the hinged side la, the front h, 5 pivots h h2, on which it turns, the bracketshelf i i', and drawers d d and e e', substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 17 th day of April, 1888.
EUGENE FITCH. Witnesses:
