MONROE DAVIS, OF OAK VALLEY, KANSAS.
WASH-BOILER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 392,315, dated November 6, 1888. Application filed November 19, 1857. Serial No. 255,578. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern- Be it known that I, MONROE DAVIS, of Oak Valley, in the county of Elk and State of Kansas, have invented a new andlmproved Washing-Machine, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a removable frame to be inserted in a wash boiler, and has for its object to support the clothes to be washed in such a manner that steam may be conveyed to any part of the clothes and the material extended so that all parts will be cleansed alike.
The invention consists in a portable frame to be inserted in a wash-boiler, constructed and arranged as hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure 1 is aperspective view of my improved device as applied in a boiler, with the boiler partly broken away, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device detached.
In the construction of thisinvention a frame, 1, of suitable size and shape, adapted to rest in the bottom of a wash-boiler, 2, is formed of any suitable open-work material, preferably of wire, whereby water and any steam generated may pass freely through it. The frame 1 is'provided with three preferably conical projections, 3, made of wire or other suitable open-work material and having arms 4 projecting from their sides. The arms 4 are constructed in the shape of spiral tubes. The number of cones 3 and arms 4 and the arrangement thereof depend on the size of the boiler in which they are to be used. The frame 1, cones 3, and arms 4 are preferably made of copper wire.
The frame 1 is provided with legs 8, of coiled wire or other suitable construction, whereby it is supported in a slightly-raised position on the bottom of boiler 2. To render the cones 3 adj ust-able on the frame 1, they are connected thereto by rings 5 and a U-shaped fasteningrod, 6, which is slipped through rings 7 in the frame 1 and through the rings 5. By this means any number of cones may be employed and the cones be adjusted in any position desired.
The cones may be connected to frame 1, and adjusted thereon by any other suitable means than that set forth.
In the operation of this device the frame 1 is placed in any suitable boiler and rests on the bottom thereof, and the boiler is filled with about two inches of water. The fabrics to be washed are then placed over the cones 3 and are held out by means of the arms 4. By means of this construction and arrangement the steam has access to all parts of the boiler and to the entire portions of the fabric to be cleaned, and the dirt is entirely removed therefrom. The clothes are then removed and placed in the rinsing-tub. It will be seen by this construction that the steam may have a direct action on the clothes in all parts of the boiler. The tubes 4, as shown, are securely connected to the cones by screwing the coiled ends into the wire surface or netting of the cone, and the tubes may be arranged on the cones in whatever position desired and secured thereto in any suitable way.
Having thus described my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A removable frame-work for wash-boilers, consisting of the wire base 1 and the wire cones 3, detachably and adj ustably connected to the base-1, as shown, as and for the purposes described.
2. A removable frame-work for wash-boilers,, consisting of the wire base 1, the wire cones 3, detachably and adj ustably connected to said base 1, as shown, and the spiral tubes 4, adjustably' secured to the wire cones, substantially as shown and described. 7
3. A removable frame-work for wash-boilers, consisting of the wire base 1, having rings 7, wire cones 3, having rings 5 and adjustable spiral tubes 4, and fastening-rod 6, substantially as described.
4. 'In a removable frame-work for wash-boilers, the combination, with the wire base 1 and the cones 3, of the connecting-rod 6, said rod arranged to connect the cones 3 to the wire base, and means for accomplishing such connection, substantially as shown and described.
5. In a removable frame-work for wash-boilers, the combination, with the wire base 1, the rings 7, secured thereto, the wire cones 3, and the rings 5, secured at the lower ends of the cones, of the U-shaped rod 6, said rod adapted to pass through the rings 5 and 7, whereby the basel and cones S are secured together, as and secured to the red (3, substantially as shown ['01- the purposes described. and deseriheih 6 luaremovable frzune-work forwush-boilr ioin hs. ms, the combination, with the wire base 1, I V l \R I U 5 having a connecting-rod, 6, secured thereto, 01' Witnesses:
