SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 392,025, dated October 30, 1888.

To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN FREDERICK GOLD- INe,a subject of Her Maj esty the Queen of Great Britain,residingatAlbanyStreet,London,England, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Spatulas Used in the Making and Mixing of Pills, Ointments, Powders, and Electuaries, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to spatulas or pillknives such as are employed in the making and mixing of pill mass, ointments, electuaries, powders, and for like purposes, the object of my invention being to provide a spatula or knife whicl1,while capable of being used in the usual way, has its edge or outline formed on such curves as I have found of service in cleaning the sides both of the pestle and mortar and removing the pill mass or othersubstauce therefrom.
'Io clearly explain the nature of my invention, reference is made to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
In Figure l the blade A has a curved recess, 1), so shaped as to fit over about one-half of the head of a pestle, B,which is indicated in dotted lines. By turning the pestle around against the blade, or vice versa, it will be seen that any substance on the pestle can be readily removed. This curved part bmay be sharpened for the purpose of more easily cleaning the pestle.
Fig. 2 shows a blade, A, with the same recess,b,and a straight edge or back, a, which is convenient for scraping or removing ointments, powders, &c., from a slab.
Fig. 3 shows a blade, A, with a similar recess, b, but adapted for a larger pestle, and with also a curved back or edge, (I, which is of such a shape as to fit the inside of an ordinary mortar, thus enabling substances to be conveniently removed therefrom. This edge also may be sharpened, if desired. The recess 1) is also convenient for scraping the sides of the pestle:
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A spatula the blade of which has a recess, b, therein, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. A spatula the blade of which has a recess, b, and a straight back or edge, 0, substantially as and for the purposes described.
