FREDERICK J. KALDENBERG, OF TARRYTOIVN, NEIV YORK.
PISTOL -STOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 391,473, dated October 23, 1888. Application filed June 6, 1888. Serial No. 276,235. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK J. KALDEN BERG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tarrytown, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsiu PistoLStocks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification, reference being had to the drawings accompanying and forming a part of the same.
In the drawings, which illustrate my improvement, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pistol, showing the stock finished according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the ornamental side pieces as mounted ready for application to the pistol-stock. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the same.
The purpose of my improvement is to pro vide means for economizing the use of the pearl or other ornamental material used in the ornamentation of pistol-stocks; also, to obviate the liability of these decorative side pieces splitting or chipping off at or near the edges when being applied to the stock or by reason of rough and careless handling of the pistol. This desired object I accomplish by mounting the delicate and ornamental side pieces in a frame formed of metal so constructed as to inclose the back and edges of the same and take the wear and strain that otherwise would come upon them.
Referring to the several views, let a represent in general the pistol stock or handle, of which I) is the main frame.
(2 d are the two side pieces, which are generally made of pearl, ivory, or other ornamental material.
Instead of securing the side pieces directly to the frame b of the pistol-stock, as is generally done, I mount them in a frame, 0, which is made of metal, preferably cast in one piece, of the proper shape for the pistol-stock, having a back portion, 0, provided with an upturned flange, e, extending entirely around its edge, except at the broad end, Where a wider flange is made, as seen at f, to adapt it to the thick end of the side piece, which flange is inclined inwardly, and has on its upper edge an inwardly turned rim portion, 9, which is slight bevel on the outer surface, as seen in Fig. 2, or both surfaces may be beveled, as
shown in Fig. 8. The outer or wide end of the piece (2 fits into the recess formed by the inwardly-turned rim 9, and the flange e incloses the edge of the same, and after the piece is inserted the flanges are rubbed down till the entire surface is smooth and uniform. The pieces of pearl are cemented to the frame, either at the back or sides, and then the whole is fastened to the frame 6 of the pistol-stock by the screw H.
A very great saving of pearl, ivory, or other material is effected by this method of securing the sides to the stocks, inasmuch as the pieces of pearl or ivory can be very much smaller than those heretofore used; and besides this, only one of the surfaces of the slab or piece need be smoothed or made of regular shape, as it is of no importance that the under part of the piece be finished in any way, as it is concealed in, its case or frame; hence much labor is saved in the preparation of the material for the side pieces.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A pistol-stock consisting of a mainframe and ornamental side pieces, the said side pieces being each mounted in a metallic frame having a back portion and an inwardly-turned rim-flange, as set forth.
2. A pistolstock formed with pearl side pieces, combined with a metal frame formed with a back portion and surrounding rim having an inclined outer surface, and a broad end flange provided with an overhanging lip, the said frame inclosing the back and edge of the side piece, as set forth.
3. In a pistol-stock, the combination of the main frame b and ornamental side pieces, d d, each mounted in a metal frame, 0, having a back, 0, and upturned flange ef, and secured to said main frame, as set forth.
FREDERICK J. KALDENBERG.
