CLOTHES DRIER. No. 391,347. Patented Oct. 16, 1888.
W'IYINESSES XQ/W . UNITED STATES PATENT Orricn.
JULIUS S. VALENTINE, OF ALBION, MICHIGAN.
CLOTHES=DRIER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 391,347, dated October 16, 1888.
Application filed March 1, 1888. Serial No. 265,7
,To all whom it may concern:
. siding at Albion, in the county of Calhoun and State of Michigan, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in ClothcsDriers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of refeach other.
erence marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in clothesdriers, the object thereof being to provide a simple and effective supportfor the diverging arms, said arms being supported upon a standard of peculiar construction, so that they can be easily rotated or locked in a stationary position.
It also consists in the special construction and arrangement of the parts, which will be hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is view, partly in perspective, of my improved clothes-drier, showing the parts separated from Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the standard. Fig. 4 is a detail view.
A refers to the post, which is securely planted in the ground, and to the upper end thereof is secured a casting, B, which has a centrally upwardly-projecting spindle, b. This casting B is provided at the base of the spindle b with a ilat portion or table, 0, and to one side thereof is arranged a pair of bracket-arms, d, the outer ends of whieh are connected bya pin, d, upon which is supported an adjustable crescentshaped gravity-latch, D, the concaved edge of which is provided near the center with curved depressions m a, separated. by a point, (i arranged midway between the ends of the latch.
E refers to a disk which has a central opening of greater diameter than the base of the spindle b. This disk has a series of projecting arms, 6, attached to it, upon the ends of which are mounted anti-friction rollers E, the bearing for these anti-friction rollers being the table 0, hereinbefore referred to.
(No model.)
F refers to a casting which is provided with a central opening, through which passes the spindle b, and adjacent to this opening are upwardly-extending walls to form a socket for g said spindle b, and the upper end of this socket is covered by a suitable cap to exclude dust and moisture. The lower portion of the casting F has a downwardly-projecting flange, G, of sufficient length and diameter to inclose the table 0, and the lower edge of this flange is provided at suitable intervals with notches g, with which the latch D will engage. This casting has also short radial arms H, to which the arms I of the clothes-drier frame are suitably attached. These arms I are provided with perforations, through which cords pass, upon which the clothes may be hung.
The latch D hereinbefore referred to, which is confined in position between the bracketarms d d by the pin d, is made of asingle piece of metal, the ends thereof being slightly enlarged or weighted. This catch is provided with notches n m, which are located at opposite sides of the center of the latch, in order that when the latch is adjusted to bring the notch or recess a above the pin d the inner or lower end of said latch will hang downward, causing the opposite or upper end to engage one of the notches g of the flange G to hold the revolving frame stationary, and when the latch is so adjusted that the notch on will engage the pin the upper end of the latch will fall free from engagement with the notch of the flange and permit the frame to rotate.
The anti-friction rollers, which are located between the castings F and B,supportthe frame so that it can be readily turned.
The depending notched flange G serves not only as ameans for engaging the locking-latch D, but as a housing to protect the rollers from dust and moisture, and to prevent apparel that may be drying from wiping grease or other lubricant from the rolls or becoming entangled in said rolls.
What Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, substantially as described, of the post-cap B, having a table and central spindle, and provided below the table with a latch-fulcrum, an adjustable curved latch having a centrally-arranged point, and on each side of said point a depression to engage the In testimony whereof I affix my signature in fulcrum, the drier-frame hub consisting of a presence of two witnesses. casting having a socket to fit the post-cap spindle, a circular flat surface, and a. depend- JULIUS S. VALENTINE. 5 ing notched flange of a diameter exceeding that of the table, and a roller-disk interposed Witnesses: between the table and hub and inclosed by the MONFORT D. WEEKs, flange of the hub.
