JAMES ALEXANDER CARPENTER, OF MARION, OHIO.
CLOTHES-DRIER.
.SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 306,319, dated October 7, 1884.
Application filed November 2, 1883. (No model.)
To (tZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES A. CARPENTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marion, in the county of Marion and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Racks, of which the following is aspecifieatiomreference beinghad therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invent-ion relates to certain improvements in clothes-racks; and it has for its objects to provide a rack which may be readily turned to apply the clothes, and in which the arms may be conveniently folded when notin use,as more fully hereinafter specified. These objects I attain by the meansillustrated inthe accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a vertical sectional view of my improved rack. Fig. 2 represents a detached view of a portion of my improved rack, and Fig. 3 represents a detached perspective view of one of the arms of my rack.
The letter A indicates a vertical cylindrical standard, which is mounted in a suitable base, B, or which may be supported upon legs, as may be desired. To the said standard are secured at proper points the sleeves C, by means of the bolts E, the said sleeves having annular recesses F, in which set and are adapted to turn the hubs G of the supporting disks or frames H. The said disks are provided with downwardly-extending vertical flanges I at their edges, and are slotted radially, as indicated by the letter K, forming recesses for the reception of the loose arms L. These arms are formed with blades M at one end, which are adapted to set and be held in the slots when the rack is folded, and at their other ends with heads N and shoulders N, by means of which they may beheld in horizontal position when required to support the clothes. It will be seen that as thus constructed the arms hang clear of each other when folded, and that when extended horizontally ample room is left be tween the upper and lower series to hang the clothes. The annularly-chambered sleeves afford afirm support for the disks and prevent them from tipping to one side, and at the same time permit them to turn freely.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
A clothes drier or rack consisting of a vertical standard mounted upon a suitable base, a sleeve or sleeves secured to the standard and provided with annular sockets projecting therefrom, revolving disks, each having a downwardly-proj ectin g hub resting in the said annular sockets and turning therein, the said disks being provided at their outer edges with downwardlyextending flanges, and also provided with rectangular radial slots, and the supportingarms each having at the outer end a blade, and at the inner end with a head or enlargement having a shoulder on one side, the said head being rectangular to be received in the slot in the disk, the entire device operating substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES ALEXANDER CARPENTER.
