Abstract

A container box closure device which may be fitted into side of a conventional container box to serve as a closable orifice. The closure unit is composed of two rectangular-shaped sections joined at one edge which grip the side of a box, when the device is slipped through a slot in the top of a box side about the box side. A slideable door opening is mounted on the exterior of the device to permit the box contents to be poured through a hole cut in the box side, when the door is in the open position.

The device is in the form of a rectangular shape and incorporates two sections that fit about the sides of a box into which the device is inserted. A slideable door serves as an opening for pouring the contents of the box through a hole cut in the side of the box.
An advantage of my device is that the one unit may be employed with conventional containers of various sizes.
BRlEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING The objects and features of the invention may be understood with reference to the following detailed description of an illustrative embodiment of the invention, taken together with the accompanying drawings in which:
FIGv 1 illustrates a perspective view of the invention;
FIG. 2 illustrates a plan view of the invention in a closed position;
FIG. 3 illustrates a plan view of the invention in an opened position; and
FIG. 4 illustrates a top sectional view of the invention fastened to a container.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT Turning how descriptively to the drawings, in which similar reference characters denote similar elements throughout the several views, FIGS. 1-4 show a box closure device may be inserted about the side 33 of a conventional cardboard box 11 through a slot cut in the top side edge of a box 11. The closure device 10 is composed of two rectangular pieces 12 and 13 held together at one end by a wedged shaped piece 14 at one end of the rectangular pieces 12 and 13 such that a gap 35 exists between the adjacent surfaces of the two rectangular pieces 12 and 13.
The device 10 is inserted through a slot in the side 33 of a box 11 so that member 12 slides inside the box along side 33 to clamp the side 33 to exterior member 13. A hole 16 is then punched in the box side 33 to align with a hole in member 12 and the orifice section 17 of member 13.
A slidable door 19 is fitted on member 13 to move longitudinally with respect to member 13, so as to cover or uncover the orifice section 17 of member 13, with a handle 20 fastened to door 19. A flexible spring strip 21 which acts as a safety latch may be mounted on the exterior surface of member 13 to lie between handle 20 and the exterior surface of member 13 when the slidable door 19 and attached handle 20 are in the open position, with the free end 21E of strip 21 abutting the wall 20W of a recess 20R in the handle 20 when the slidable door 19 and attached handle 20 is in the closed position so as to latch handle 20 in the closed position to prevent accidental spillage of the contents 38 of box 11.
Since obvious changes may be made in the specific embodiment of the invention described herein, such modifications being within the spirit and scope of the invention claimed, it is indicated that all matter contained herein is intended as illustrative and not as limiting in scope.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
l. A reusable one-piece closure assembly that may be readily installed on a conventional paperboard box to serve as a closable orifice of the box, comprising two members in the form of strips of material which are fastened together at a common end so as to clamp together a side of box lying between the two members when the inner member is pushed through a slit in the side of a box, with the exterior member fitted with a slidable door member to alternately open or close an orifice in the exterior member,
said slidable door member and said exterior member fitted with safety latch means to latch the slidable door member in the closed position of the slidable door member,
said safety latch means comprising a flexible flat spring strip, one end of which is mounted to the exterior surface of the exterior member to lie between the slidable door member and the exterior member in the open position of the slidable door member, with the other end of the spring strip member projecting, in the closed position of the slidable door member, into a recess in the exterior face of the slidable door member and against a wall of said recess, said slidable door member being freely slidable over said flat spring member when the flat spring member is manually depressed against the exterior member.
