CONTAINER Filed July 11, 1938 amen [M Patented Aug. 13, 1940 UNITED STATES PATENT oFFlc- 2 Claims.
My invention has for its object to provide a means for removably securing a packet, containing material, in an exposed position on or within a container. The invention is advantageously I applicable to enclosing materials or objects in packages, wherein the materials or objects relate to each'other and may be sold together. More particularly, the invention has for its object for removably connecting packets of coloring material a] to cartons commonly used for containing oleomargarine, butter, or other foods and to dispose the packet containing the coloring material within the carton and exposed to view, at least in part, through an opening formed in a part of II' the carton and thus avoid the sale of the food material without the coloring material required to color or otherwise modify the food material.
The invention may be contained in containers or packages of different forms and to illus- QQ trate a practical application of the invention, I have selected a carton in which the invention is embodied. The carton selected is shown in the accompanying drawing and is described hereinafter.
Fig. 1 illustrates a perspective view of an end part of the carton. Fig. 2 is an end view of the carton. Fig. 3 illustrates an end view of a modifled form of the carton shown in Fig. 1.
The carton l is of the type commonly used in connection with butter and oleomargarine and the like. It is provided with the usual tongues 2 and a carton closure flap 4, that forms an end wall of the carton. The flap 4 has a. tongue 5 that is insertable intermediate the side wall I of the carton and the contiguous edges of the tongues 2 for closingthe carton. The packet 8 containing the color material is a flat package. The closure flap 4 is provided with one or more openings shaped in outline toenable securement of the 0 packet 8 of coloring material to the closure flap 4 and in position such that when the closure flap 4 is closed by insertion of the tongue 5 into the carton, the packet 8 may be viewed from the exterior of the carton.
The form of the opening in the flap may be greatly varied and the means for securing the packet material with reference to the closure flap may, likewise, be varied. In the form shown, the packet and the flap, about the opening, have interengaging edge portions. The edges of one or both may be irregular or formed to have overlapping portions. As illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, a plurality of openings ID are formed in the closure flap 6 to produce a window H having cross parts i2 and corner portions l4 of the packet are pressed through the openings 10 to cause engagement of the edge portions of the packet by edge portions of the openings ill or the window ll. 5 Preferably, the openings I0 are formed to provide edges 15, which are inclined to each other, and the packet 8 is formed rectangular and has dimensions substantially the same as the major dimensions of the window and yet so that when m, the corners of the packet are pressed through the openings W, the corners of the packet'will engage the parts of the closure flap 4 in the region of the edges l5 of the openings I0 and the cross bars to retain the packet 8 in position with reference II to the flap 4. The packet 8 is thus secured intermediate opposite side surface portions of the closure flap d and can be viewed through the window H or the openings II) when the carton I is closed.
In the form of construction illustrated in Fig. 3, the flap is provided with portions-l1 that project inwardly with respect to the edge of the opening. The general outline of the opening is rectangular and has dimensions substantiallythe same as that of the packet I0 and is also provided with edge parts 15 for engaging the corners of the packet 8 when the corner portions of the packet are depressed from one side of the closure flap to cause the corners of thepacket 8 to pass 3 the inclined edge portions I5 of the opening 16, which produces interengagement of surface por tions on opposite sides of the closure flap and the packet. a
I claim:
1. In a package, a carton having a wall,-the wall having a plurality of window openings having edge parts and disposed in adjacent relation to each other and defining therebetween crossparts integrally connected to said wall, and a packet having edge parts insertable in a plurality of said window openings and secured centrally by the cross-parts and edgewise by the edge parts of a plurality of said window openings.
2. In a package, a carton having a wall, the wall havingan opening; a pair of integral cros's parts extending at right angles to each other across said opening to define a plurality of adjacently disposed windows having edge parts; and a packet whose edge parts are inserted in said windows and is secured centrally bythe cross parts and edgewise by the window edge parts.
