To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WM. L. WOODS, of Washington, District of Columbia, have invented an improvement upon the paper-file and document-sat'e for which Ireceived Letters Pat ent bearing date August 12,' 1862; and I do le and document safe suitablefor all ordinary usual Wear of handling. 1

To enable. others skilled in the art to make and use my invent-ion, I will proceed to de- I construct my paper-tile and safe of any suitable size and out ot' any suitable materials used by carpenters, book-binders, box-makers, tin and copper smiths, and in the form 'ofl a folding box, (shown open and closed by Figures 1 and 2 in the annexed drawings,) which fol-din g box is com posed of an exterior box,A,

innerbox, F G H,Fig. 2, with a lid, I', Fig. 2, which inner box is not separate from-the ex-A terior box, but can be drawn out-in part, the' front 'edge of the top of the inner box coming in contact with a cleat placed under the top of the outer box at the open end.- The sides of the interior box -F and G, Fig. 2, are equal, and are cut diagonally from the front edge of they lid I, Fig. 2, is fastened by asubstantial hinge, and which lid'serves as a handle to draw out the inner box. The lid I, Fig. 2, can 'be made to fit over the end of the outer box, with flanges of dimensions to suit, or may be made vto close into the exterior box, as shown by Fig. 4, and may be fastened by any ordinary fastening or catch. The end J of the interior boxis perforated with small holes, as shownv4in dotted outline in Fig'.,2, so that on suddenly returning the inner box to its-placethe air.

Upon comparison itwill'be'found that my presente-improvement acecmplishes the' 'object of my rst invention by ldoing away: with the raising cap-lid K, Fig. 3,-and`by ar- -ran ging the falling tabletflid L, Fig. 3, so that, it will close up the le and safe in secure manner, protecting the papers, and that ythe holes perforated in the end ofthe 'innerbox'will greatly. facilitate the cleanliness ofthe 'papers i by reason of its peculiar'construction forcing out the dustwhen lopened-and-'c1osed, the whole improvement rendering the vtile and'safe more simple, more practical, and more useful.

AThe mode of using the improved paper-file` and document'safe is to hold the-safe in your left hand, with; the openingv from you, and with the right hand raise th-e lid and draw out the inner box, vwhich 'will present the papers for examination by their titles, vvrittenon thev ends of the-papers. .Having selected/your paper, force the drawer back. to its place quickly and close the lid.'v
