UNITED STATES NATHANIEL ALLEN, OF LOWELL, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, OF ONE-HALF TO PLACE.
ABBIE R. YORK, TRUSTEE, OF SAME HAIR-CRIMPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part; of Letters Patent No. 388,387, dated August 28, 1888.
Application tiled January 4, 1886. Serial No. 187,601. (No model.)
in the county of Middlesex and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Hair- Grimpers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to implements for [O crimping the hair, to impart to it a wavy,
curly, or frizzled appearance.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is an isometric view of my improved crimper, showing a lock of hair wound upon the legs I5 thereof and held in place by an elastic; Fig. 2, an isometric view of my improved crimper, and Fig. 3 a side elevation of the same.
The crimper proper, A, consists of 2. [lat strip bent, as shown in Fig. 3, into the form of a split pin or spring-cotter, with diverging straight legs a a, the closed end or head a of said crimper being enlarged into a circle, as shown. An endless elastic band, B, is looped into the circular head a the legs a a being spread apart to admit the band, said band being not longer than said crimper. The object of enlarging the closed end of the crimper into a circle or closed loop is to form a suitable place to receive the elastic band without pinching or cutting the same, and to keep the elastic band from being accidentally disconnected from the crimper. The edges of the strip which forms the crimper A are rounded, in order that they may not cut the 5 hair wound upon them.
When the crimper is used, the attached end of a lock of hair, H, is'placed between the legs a a of the crimper near its closed end, and is then looped around said legs alternately in opposite directions, as shown in Fig. 1, to the free end of said lock of hair. The hair when so looped around the legs of the crimper is held in place by the elastic band B, which is stretched over one leg of the crimper, and contracting against the lock of hair prevents it from unwinding. The free end of a lock of hair may be placed between the legs of a crimper, which are then pinched upon the hair by the thumb and finger, the hair being then wound about the crimper by turning the latter, and the band B is then stretched over the open end of the crimper, and contracting prevents the hair from unwinding. In either caseto remove the crimper from the hair it is only necessary to restore the band B to the position shown in Fig. 2, (the position it occupies when the crimper s to be used,) and first from the hair.
I claim as my invention- The combination of the crimper formed of a strip having rounded edges and doubled upon itself and bent at its closed end into a circle or closed loop, and an elastic band looped into said circle or closed loop, as and for the purpose specified.
NATHANIEL ALLEN.
