UNITED STATES PATENT Orrrcn.
ELISHA A. DURFEY, OF MITCHELL, DAKOTA TERRITORY.
OIL-CAN HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 388,348, dated August 21, 1888.
Application filed April 13, 1888.
To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, ELIsHA A. DURFEY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Mitchell, in the county of Davison and Territory of Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil- Can Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention pertains to certain new and useful improvements in oil-can holders or retainers, having for its object the provision of simple and highly efficient means for holding or retaining an oil-can in position when notin use, and to permit of its ready removal from said holder when it is desired to use the saine.
The invention comprises the detail construction, combination, and arrangement of parts substantially as hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying' drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my invention, showing an oil-can in position. Fig. 2 is a side view showing the spring-held arm elevated and the oilcan in dotted lilies, and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view.
Referring to the drawings, A indicates a ring or circular bracket provided with an outer peripheral groove, a, and with a circular rim or iiange, e', as shown. From the upper-portion of this ring o'r circular bracket projects a stationary arm or extension, a, preferably formed with or rigidly secured to the ring or bracket A. In the upper end of this arm or extension a2 and in the lower portion of the ring or bracket A are formed holes or apertures bb, for insertion of screws or nails for holding or retaining the bracket in position.
Bis an arm pivotally secured between two posts or gndgeons, b' b', and said arm is pro vided with two downwardly-projeeting tingers, bl b2, the outer ends of which are curved, as shown7 at nearly right angles to their eentral portions.
O is a spring rigidly secured at one end upon a short post or stud, d, projecting from the arm or extension ai, and said spring is designed to fit and bear tightly against the inner side of Serial No. 270,572. (No model.)
the pivoted portion of the arm B, whereby said arm is normally held when lowered in the position shown.
In practice, to insert an oil-can in position, the operator raises the arm B, together with its fingers, into the position shown in dotted lines, Fig. 2, and after insertion of said can, which tsin the circular groove or recess a, the spring-held arm is returned to its normal position, and said can is held by means of the fingers of said arm bearing against the outer curved portion of said can, the tube thereof being permitted to project between the fingers of said arm, as shown.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that by means of my invention an oil-can is readily and easily secured in position and held as against accident, caused by the same falling, as often occurs, and it will also be seen that said can is readily removed by elevating the sprin`g held arm.
I claim as my invention-` l. The combination, with the ring or bracket and the arm or extension, of the pivotally-secured arm having curved fingers, and secured between posts or gudgeons ot' said arm or eX- tension, and the spring secured to the post or stud and bearing against one side of said arm when the latter is lowered and against the other side thereof when raised, substantially as shown and described.
2. The herein-described improved oilcan holder, comprising the circular ring or bracket, the stationary arm or extension having the posts or gudgeons, the arm having curved fingers projectingtherefrom and pivotally secured between two of said posts orgudgeons, and the spring secured to one of said posts and bcaring against one side of one end of said arm when the latter is lowered and against the other side thereof when raised, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ELISI-IA A. DURFEY.
