llll mu :I !IIIIIIIIlllllllllllllllllll UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MICHAEL NOLAN, OF BLOOMING'ION, ILLINOIS.
GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 385,771, dated July 10, 1888.
Application filed December 20, 1887. Serial No. 258,540.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, hIIOI-IAEL NOLAN, of Bloomington, in the county of McLean, and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in gates, the object of the same being to provide agate of such construction that snow will not interfere with the operation of the same.
A further object is to provide a gate which may be opened from each approach Without dismounting from an animal or alighting from a vehicle.
A further object is to provide a gate of the above character which may be utilized for the separation of large stock from the smaller.
\Vith these ends in view my invention consists in certain features of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side View of the gate open. Fig. 2 is a plan view showing the gate closed. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on linear x of Fig. 2, showing the lower section of the gate raised.
Numberl represents a fencepost, to which is hinged the gate 2. To the post 1 is pivoted the S-shaped metallic plate 3, the same being also rigidly secured to the gate-post i. The
ends of the plate 3 are provided with the arms 5, located at right angles thereto, the said arms being perforated, as shown at 6, for the purpose of receiving the links 7, to which are secured the rods 8, the opposite ends of said rods being. secured to the levers 9, pivoted to the fenceposts 10.
(No model.)
The gate is made in two sections, the lower section, 11, being free of the post4 and hinged to the upper section, 12, which is attached to the post 4. When it is desired to elevate the lower section of the gate to get the same out of the way of snow, or for the purpose of separating live stock, the same is accomplished by means of the gravity-pawl 13, which is caught and held by the catch 14 on the arm 15, secured to the gate. When the lower sec tion, 11, is down, it is held in such position by means of the bar 16, which closes over the staple 17, where it is held by passing the spring-finger 18 through the eye of said staple. An additional lock is afi'orded by the hook 19 and the staple 20.
The gate is opened and closed by either of the levers 9.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a gate, the combination, with the plate 3, pivoted to post 1 and rigidly secured to the gate-post 4, arms 5 at right angles thereto, links secured to said arms, "rods 8, connected with said links, levers pivoted to posts and connected with said rods for operating the gate, a hinged lower section, a gravitypawl pivoted to said section, and a catch for locking the pawl and securing the section in ele vated adjustment, and a hook, 19, and staple 20, for locking the section, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 6th day of April, 1888.
MICHAEL NOLAN.
