UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CLARENCE W. MoNEIL, OF SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO J. B.

LOCKING-BOLT FOR GUARDS TO OPENINGS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 31, 1908.
Application filed. March 22, 1907. Serial N 0. 363,991.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE W. MONEIL, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Antonio, in the county of Bexar and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locking-Bolts for Guards to Openings, of which the following is a specification.
My invention pertains to certain and useful improvements in locking bolts.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved locking means which can be easily operated. and still when locked will effectually prevent unlocking thereof.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention further consists in the novel details of construction and combination of parts to be fully herein after referred to and later pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the accom anying drawings forming a part of this specification and wherein like numerals of reference indicate similar parts throughout, Figure 1, is a front elevation showing my improved device applied to a frame, Fig. 2, is a vertical section on line YY-of Fig. 1, Fig. 3, is a horizontal section on line XXof Fig. 2, Fig. 4,is an enlarged detail view showing two of the vertical rods and one of the end bars with the locking means applied thereto, and Fig. 5, is a View of the inner face of the end bar.
In showing my invention in use I have disclosed a special form of window guard with which I use the invention, and in referring thereto in the drawings, 1, designates a window frame formed at its ends with vertical pockets 2, the cover for the pockets to the right of Fig. 1, being shown removed. At the top and bottom of each pocket there is secured a metal plate 3, provided with apertures through which pass reduced ends 4, of a vertical rod 5, which rod is at its lower end surrounded by a coil spring 6, secured at its upper end to said rod and at its lower end projecting in an aperture provided therefor in the lower plate as at 7. Thus the guard is automatically wound about rod 5, as will be now pointed out.
Ledge 8 of the window sill and top 9 are each provided with a longitudinal way 10, in which travel and are guided a series of steel rods 11, arranged in spaced relation as shown and connected by a series of flexible chains 12. These chains comprise two spaced links 13, and connecting links 14, each of which is penetrated by one of the rods 11, which therey serves to provide the pivotal point for said links. The end bars 15, are connected to the links 13, 13, of the adjacent rod by a short section of chain 16, which has a link 17, secured therebetween and penetrated by said rod, and a connection 18, secured to member 19, of the end bar 15. This end bar comprises two movable members 19, 20, connected by the pin and slot connection 21, 21, and 22, these members being designed for simultaneous operation in opposed directions to thereby enter seats 23, 24, at the top and bottom of the window frame. This movement of members 19, 20, is effected by an operating' lever 25, of Z-shape having its inner end secured to pin or rivet 21, of the pin and slot connection between the bars and having its outer end pivoted by a rivet 26, to the off set end 27, of a bar which at its opposite end is secured to pin or rivet 21, so as to operate the latter therewith. It will thus be observed that by exerting downward pull on one of the operating levers and an upward pull on the other of the levers, the respective locking members of the end bars will be forced away from one another until the levers are at right angles to the bars at which time the locking members at their ends occupy their res ective seats 23. When said levers are in 100 ed position they aline with one another and are so related that a padlock may be passed through aperture 28, of each lever, especially provided therefor, which will efiectua ly prevent movement of either lever.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-
1. In combination with a guard or the like, means for locking the same composed of two movable members, means whereby said members may have a sliding movement, a bar connected to one of the members, and an operating lever connected to said bar and to the other member whereby when said lever is operated said members will be actuated towards and away from one another in unison.
2. In combination with a guard or the like, means for locking the same composed of two movable members having a pair of pin and slot connections, therebetween, a bar pivotally connected at one of its ends to one of V In testimony whereof l aflixiny signature, said pins, and an operating lever pivoted to in presence of two witnesses.
the other pin near its base and pivoted to the b other end of said bar at an intermediate point CLARENCE M 5 whereby when said lever is operated said Witnesses:
members will be actuated towards and away EMIL BEHRENs,
from one another in unison. 1 M. COPPANS.
