Description

UNITED STATES y PATENT OFFICE.
G. A. DABNEY, OF SANy JOS, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVED WASHING-MACHINE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 38,376, dated May 5, 1863.
To afZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, G. A. DARNEY, ot` San J os, in the county of Santa Clara and State of California, have invented a new and Improved Clothes-Washing Machine; and I do herebydeclare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a side sectional view of my invention, taken in the line w x, Fig. 2; Fig. 2, a plan or top view ot' the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding par-ts in the two gures.
This invention rela tes to an improved clotheswashing machine ot' that class in which an oscillatin g concave of rollers is used in connection with a rubber.
The object of the invention is to obtain a more efficient machine of the kind than any hitherto devised by arranging, the rubber in such a manner that it may be made to oper ate automatically, by the movement of the concave, and at the same time be capable of being adjusted at the will of the operator, in order to regulate the pressure on the clothes as may be required.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A represents the suds-box ot" the machine, supported at a suitable height by legs a, or any proper framing; and B B are two uprights, which are secured one at each side ofthe box A, and connected at their upper ends by a cross-bar, (l.
D is a rock-shaft, the journals of which are iitted and allowed to Work freely in the upper parts of the uprights B B. To this rockshatt there are attached two pendent bars, E E, the lower ends of which have each a short bar, b, secured to them at right angles, and the ends of the bars b have diagonal bars c attached, the lower ends of which are secured d d by means of pivot-bolts or by a single rod passing through both of them and the bars d d, to admit of an up-anddown movement of said bars d d. The concave works in the upper part of the box A, as will be seen by referring to Fig. 1, and between the bars E E there is a rock-shaft, F, the journals of which are fitted and allowed to work freely in said bars. There is also a rock-shaft, Gr, placed between the lower parts of the uprights B B, and through these two rock-shafts two rods, H H, pass loosely. Said rods also pass through a cross-bar, I, which is permanently attached to the rods. To the ends of the cross-bar I there are attached cords g g. These cords pass over pulleys It h on the cross-bar I, said pulleys being permanently attached to the cross-bar I. The cords g g are secured to thef bars ff. To the lower ends of the rods H H there is attached a rectangular block, J, which serves as a rubber. This rubber has a soapcap, K, on its upper surface, and spiral springs L' t' are placed on the rods H H be tween the rubber J and the rock-shaft G. The springs i t' have a tendency to keep the rubber J pressed down upon the clothes, as will be fully understood by referring' to Fig. 1.
From the above description it will be seen that by moving the concave back and forth a similar movement will be communicated to the rubber J, and the clothes which are placed in the concave will be subjected to a rubbing and pressure through the medium of J, the pressure of the latter being regulated as desired, or as occasion may require, by the operator bearing down more or less on the cross-rod g of the bars ff.
The device is extremely simple and efficient, performing its Work rapidly, and in a thorv ough and perfect manner.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new,and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the oscillating concave and rubber, when used in connection with the oblique bars ff, connected with the rubber by the cords g g', and theV rubber arranged,
`as shown, to admit of having its pressure graduated at the will of the operator, as herein set forth. f
