Be it known that I, MAURICE LACY, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Wheaton, in the county of Du Page and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful improvement in Painters Scaffolds, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in painters scaffolds; and it consists in a certain novel construction and arrangement of parts, fully set forth hereinafter, and specifically pointed out in the claims.

The object of the invention is to provide an attachment for the ordinary scaffold which will render the working on them perfectly safe. When scaffolds .consist merely of a platform supported outside of a window, the person thereon is in constant danger of falling therefrom, and therefore I provide an adjustable railing to be placed around the 'said platform, which will prevent the operator from falling od, and which may be readily removed from the platform. I also provide a series of steps having a railing` around the platform at the top thereof, which may lbe secured to the platform of the scaffold, to enable the operator to reach the tops of very high windows which cannot be reached from the main platform.

In the accompanying` drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of the scaffold provided with the steps and applied in the operative position to a Window. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the device detached from the Window and looking at the inner side. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal central section of the same. Fig. it is a perspective view of the ordinary scaffold provided with the railing.

Referring by letter to the drawings, A designates the platform of the ordinary painters scaffold, provided on the under side with the usual brace, B, to bear against the wall under the window and support the cuter end of the platform. Theinner end of-the said platform is provided with a longitudinal series of perforations close to each edge of the same, and also with a central series, (designated by the reference-letter a.) C C C represent metal plates arranged over the said series of perforations, and having perforations c therein to align with the said perforations. rlhrough these perforations are passed the pins D D, which pass down on the inner side of the sill of the window and hold the platform in place.

E designates the series of steps secured to the upper side of the platform, and the said series may consist of any desired number of steps, but preferably three, as shown in the drawings. The bottom or base board, F, of the steps is extended inwardly over the center ofthe platform A, and is provided in the center with a longitudinal series of perforations, f, Which align with the perforations in the center of the said board A, and the pin which passes through the perforation in the center of the board A is also passed through. one of the perforationsf to hold the inner end of the base-board F in position. The series of perforationsf are provided so that the base-board may be drawn in close to the Windenr or placed some distance therefrom, to suit the operator. The sides G of the steps are extended slightly below the base-board to form the flanges g g, and the said iianges are provided with aligned perforations g, through which are passed securing-bolts H. The flanges g are adapted to pass down on opposite sides of the platform A, and thus prevent lateral play of the outer end ofthe base-board F, and when the holt H is passed through the perforations in the flanges the outer end of the steps cannot be raised, and therefore it is held securely in place ou the platform of the scaffold. 1

K represents the removable railing,which is secured tothe upper step or platform, L, of the device. Thesaid platform L is provided around the edges with a flange, Z, which extends laterally, and the base K of the railing is provided around the inner side with a groove, k, 9

adapted to fit the said ange. The ends of the sides of the base extend slightly forward of the front side of the platform L, and are pro` vided With perforations through Which are passed the detainingbolt K, which prevents IOL) the base K from sliding rearwardly, and consequently holds the railing securely on the platform L. The said base K is provided with the usual standards, m m, and the top rail, M, the same being made either of wroughtiron ornamented in any suitable manner or of hard wood polished or suitably dressed. Thus it will be seen that the railing K is removable from the steps and the steps are movable toward or from the window at will, and may be adjusted in any position to suit the operator.

Vhen it is not necessary to reach to any great height and the steps are not needed, the railing N, as seen in Fig. 4, is applied directly to the platform A. The base N of the railing may be provided, if desired, with the groove around the inner edge to t over the outer edge of the platform, as described in connection with the railing K, orit may, as shown in the drawings, be provided on opposite sides with the two depending ears O, provided with perforations in the lower ends, through which is passed the bolt I), which extends under the platform A.

Q Q designate small vertical bolts which are passed through the inner ends of the side bars of the base and the platform A to prevent lateral play of the railing at the inner end. This railing is also composed of the uprights r and the top rail, R, as before described in connection with the railing K.

A scaffold thus provided with a rm railing may be used by women and even children with perfect safety, while one uuprovided with a railing is dangerous even for men, as they may inadvertently step off and fall.

This device is peculiarly adapted for the use of janitors who must wash the outsides of the windows, and also for painters and mechanics of various kinds who are obliged to work on the outside of the house at a great distance from the ground.

When very large windows are to be cleaned, it is sometimes difficult to reach the upper parts of the same from the ordinary platform, and therefore the movable steps may be attached to the platform, and they will be found very convenient.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-

1. The combination, with the scaffold having a platform, A, ef the steps E on the upper side of the platform and having the depending flanges gg, to pass on opposite sides of the platform, and the bolts H, to pass through the said flanges under the platform to hold the steps thereon, substantially as specified.

2. The combinat-ion, with the scaffold having the platform A, provided at the inner end with the central series of perforations, a, of the steps E, having the base-board F, provided at the inner end with the series of perforations f, to align with the pcrforations a, the bolt or pin to pass through the aligned perforations, the depending iianges g g on the sides of the steps to pass down on opposite sides of the platform, and having perforations g' therein, and the bolt H, to pass through the said'perforations, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

3. The combination, with the scaffold having the platform A, adapted to be secured to the sill of a window, of the steps E, adapted to be movably secured to the said platform, and having the iiange Z around the upper step, the railing K, having the base K, provided around the inner side with the groove lc to fit the flange Z, and the bolt K2, to pass through the sides of the base at the inner end and engage the front side of the upper step, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose specified.

4. The combination, with the scaffold having the platform A, of the steps E. removably secured to the said platform and having the rails J J at the sides of the steps, the platform L at the top, and the horizontal flange l around the outer edge of the said platform, the removable railing K, secured around the platform L and comprising the base K', having grooves k around the inner side to receive the flange Z, aligned perforations in the inner ends of the sides of the base, through which passes the bolt K, to prevent the base from sliding rearwardly, the uprights m, secured at the lower ends to the base, and the top rail, M, secured to the upper ends of the uprights, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose specified.

5. The combination, with the scaffold having the platform A, of the movable railing secured to the upper side thereof and adapted to be adj usted at any desired point of the same, as and for the purpose specified.

6. The combination, with a painter-s scaffold, of the steps E, adjustably secured thereto and having the removable railing around the same, arranged substantially as and for the purpose specified.

7. In a painters scaffold, the platform A, adapted to be secured to the window-sill, and the steps E, removably and adj ustably secured to the platform, as set forth.

8. In a painters scaffold, the platform adapted to be secured to the window-sill, and the brace B, depending from the platform and designed to bear against the house below the sill, the steps E, removably and adjustably secured to the platform,and the removable railing around the steps, as set forth.
