F. J. SLACK.
PLATFORM ATTACHMENT FOR LADDERS.
No. 352,716.- Patented Nov. 16, 1886.
. UNITED STATES.
PATENT OFFICE.
FRED. J. SLACK, OF MANCHESTER, HAMPSHIRE.
PLATFORM ATTACHMENT FOR LADDERS.
SPECIFICATIQN forming part of Letters PatentNo. 352,716, dated November 16, 1886.
I Application filed June 12, 1886. Serial No. 204,904. (No model.)
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, FRED. J. SLACK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Manchester, in the county of Hillsborough and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Platform Attachments for Ladders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use thesame, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a platform attachment for ladders; and it consists of two sectionsa platform-section and -a bracing-sectionwhich are hinged together, theplatformsection being provided with a hook for its attachment to the rounds of the ladder, and the bracing-section having a series of hooks for its attachment to the ladder, all of which will be hereinafter described, and then pointed out in the claim- 7 In the annexed drawings, illustrating my invention, Figure l is a perspective view of a ladder provided with my improvedplatform attachment. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the attachment and the part of the ladder adjacent to it, and Fig. 3 is a rear View of the same. I
Like letters of reference designate like parts in all the figures.
A A represent the side bars, and B the rounds, of an ordinarily-constructed ladder.
Obviously my improved attachment may be used with various kinds and patterns of ladders, the present kind being given merely as an example of the application of my improvement.
O and D designate the two parts of the platform'attachment. They are merely rect-. angular wooden sections of greater or less size, as desired. These parts '0 D are hinged together by means of any convenient hinge,.as E. Furthermore, both the part (land the part D are provided with a single hook or a series of hooks for their attachment to the ladder. As shown in the drawings, the part 0, which, when the attachment is in position, forms the platform proper, is provided with a single hook. a, located at the middle of its free end. Ihe partD, which, when the at tachment is in position, forms the brace for the platform proper, is provided with two longitudinal strips, b, secured to-the inner face thereof near the edges, and each strip being formed or provided with a series of downwardly-curved hooks. c. The hook a fastens the platform to one of the ladder-rounds, and the hooks 0 serve to attach the lower portion of the bracing part to another of the rounds.
By having a series of hooks, c, lam enabled to adj nst the platform attachment to suit the inclination of the'ladder, and so that the platform C may be always level.
\Vith an attachment of'my improved eonstruction a mancan work with ease near the very top of the ladder. It is very useful in painters work, and in places where it is inconvenient to erect stagings or scaffolds when it is desired to make repairs or improvements upon the outside of buildings, particularly brick buildings. It is used, also, to work in among the angles of buildings, for a man can place a ladder by the side of any building and mount it with this device in hand, and attach it to any round of the ladder, even the top one, and stand upon it, with sufficient room for the tools, 860., with which he works. Having thus described my invention, wha
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is V r A platform attachment for ladders, consisting of the platform-section G and the bracingsection D, said sections being hinged together, and section 0 being provided with a hook, a, and section B being provided with a series of hooks, c c c, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses. I
FRED. J. SLACK. Witnesses: JESSE B. PATTIE, B. P. OILLEY.
