Description
M- ELLIS. Farmers? Boiie r Patented April 28,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MATT ELLIS, OF SOUTH CARVER, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN FARMERS BOILERS.
Specification forining part of Letters Patent No. 38,299, dated April 28, 1863.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MATT ELLIS, of South Carver, in the county of Plymouth and State 0" Massachusetts, have invented a new useful, and Improved Farmers Boiler; and do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction of a flue around a farmers boiler so as to conduct the heat around its entire circumference before it passes into the chimney. This is done by an arrangement of a cut-off and rim, in connection with a cylinder or drum and a boiler, so as to secure the greatest advantage of the heat, by which the desired result is efi'ected in less time and with less fuel than heretofore.
The fire-box, on its sides, is so constructed as to form a circular opening at the top, on which I place the rim, which is of sufficient width to form a flue between the cylinder and the boiler, the rim being placed at some distance below the top of the boiler, or about midway between the top and bottom. On the side of the rim under the outlet of the drum there is a notch or throat, between which and the outlet in the cylinder is a device or cut-off by which the heat is prevented from passing on" directly, and is forced to pass into the flue, encircling the boiler, and then passes ofl' thr ugh the outlet of the cylinder h.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation. Figure 1 is a sectional view through A and B of a fire-box, cylinder or drum, rim, and boiler. Fig. 2 is a top view of the rim Fig. 3 is a view of the cut-off.
a a a a is a cylinder or drum with a corrugated or plane surface, constituting a housing for the boiler or kettle, having a flange on its upper and inner edge, thus forming a rest or hold for the boiler. Between the cylinder and boiler is a space forming a flue, through which the heat passes, as indicated by the arrows,
Fig. 3, thus heating the entire surface of the boiler above the fire-box, which fire-box is separated from the flue by a rim, b b b 12, Figs. 1
and 2. Near the outer edge of this rim rests the cylinder.
On the under surface or side and near the inner edge of the rim there are two flanges or fillets, between which the upper edge of the fire-box enters, and by means of these flanges the rim is kept in position on the fire-box. On the upper surface or side of the rim there are two flanges or fillets, c and d, projecting upward. c is near to the inner edge of the rim designed to strengthen the rim and render the flue tight nextto the boiler. The other flange, d, is at a little distance from the outer edge of the rim, leaving a space sufficient for the lower edge of the cylinder to be placed on the rim outside of this flange. This flange is also designed to render the flue air-tight and to keep the cylinder in position.
6 e e 6 indicate ears or outward projections from the cylinder or drum on the inside, just above the flange or fillet d, with openings or holes to correspond with openings or holes in the rim in which to put bolts to hold the rim and cylinder or drum together.
At a e is an opening or notch in the rim constituting the throat of the flue, which is indicated by the arrows, through which the heat passes into the chamber between the cylinder and the boiler or kettle k, passing out at h.
At f f are upward projections with niches in the lower edge of the cylinder or drum corresponding with the upward projection on the rim, designed to preventa circular movement of the cylinder.
At 9 g is a cut-oft, somewhat in the shape of the letter S, designed to prevent a direct passage of the heat through h, and causing it to pass into the chamber, and thus pass around the boiler, as indicated bythe arrows.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- The cut-0E g g and rim b b b b, in connection with the cylinder or drum or a a a and boiler It, as and for the purpose specified.
In witness that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand.
MATT ELLIS.
In presence of A. B. MAXIM, A. F. TILLsON.
