To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, ROBERT S. SHEELEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Galesburg, in the county of Knox and State of illinois, have invented an lmproveinent in Stoves, of which the following is a specilication.
rllhis vinvention is an improvement in stoves and has particular reference to a heating drum stove.
An object of the invention is the provi sion of an inner drum for the stove constructed in a novel manner whereby the saine will provide an exhaust fiue for the products ofcombustion and thus present a maximum heating surface and a correspondingly increased amount of heat.
Another object is to provide a drum of the character described which is simple in construction, easy to manufacture, and effective in carrying out the purpose for which it is designed.
The inventive idea involved is capable of receiving a variety of mechanical expressions, one of which, for the purpose of illustrating the invention, is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- 1 Figure l is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of a stove constructed in accordance with the invention. Referring more particularly to the. accompanying drawings, in which like reference characters indicate similar parts, the numeral 5 indicates the base of a stove constructed in any preferred manner andv having mounted thereon the fire box 6. The outer casing 7, of any ordinary construction, is supported on the casing 11 of the firebox 6 and has the top 8 secured to the upper end of said casing and provided with a flue outlet S.
The drum, generally indicated by the nuineral 9, is preferably of a substantially cylindrical formation and is mounted in the casing 7 in concentric relation thereto, the drum on the interior surface and adjacent the bottom thereof being provided with an annular spacing flange 10 which engages an upstanding portion 11 of a casing 11 which surrounds the lire box 6 thus maintaining the drum in the same relative position at all times. A flange 12 extends outwardly from the portion l1 and resting on this flange is an inwardly extending flange 14E at the lower end of the casing 7 and abutting the portion ll whereby said casing is supported in position. Said drinn is also provided with vertically arranged spacing iianges l2 exteriorly and at the top and bottom thereof, said latter flangesbeing adapted to engage the inner. wall of the outer casing. The drum 9 is closed at its upper end by means of a top 13 which is spaced from the top of the stove and overhangs or extends laterally from the drum for a major portion of the periphery thereof as indicated at 13', said top being reduced as indicated at lalto provide a space through which the products of combustion in the interior of the stove may escape into the flue S. The over-hanging portion of the top 13 engages the outer easing 7 so that the heat will be prevented from passing upwardly into the top of the stove or out of the flue S except through the space formed by the reduction of said top as previously described. At the extremities of the cut-out portion 14 the` drinn is provided with vertically arranged baille plates or flanges 15 which extend laterally from the drum and terminate a slight distance short of the bottom thereof, the outer edges of said plates engaging the inner surface of the casing 7. Between the plates 15 and adjacent the bottom of the drum 9 the same is provided with outstanding flanges 16 surrounding an opening formed in the drum whereby to provide a fuel inlet, the outer edges of said flanges 16 registering with the opening in the outer casing 7 closed by the door 17. It will thus be seen that fuel may be easily inserted through the fuel inlet into the fire box 6. At a point diametrically opposite the fuel inlet the drum is provided with an elongated vertically arranged opening or passage 18 through which the products of combustion and heat from the fire box escape into the air space between the outer casing and said drum as shown by the arrows in Fig. 3. The heated air and products of combustion will circulate around said drum in both directions until the same strikes the baille plates 15 when it will be directed downwardly and around the bottom ends of said plates and then up through the space between the same and out of the flue. It
will thus be apparent that by causing the heat to take this circuitous path the same will be retained within the stove a maximum length of time and there will also be provided a maximum heating surface with a resultant increase in theamount of heat produced.y s
What is claimed is:
l. A stove comprising an outer casing including a top having a flue outlet, a drum mounted therein and of a substantially Cylindrical formation, the upper end of said drum being provided with an overhanging flange cut away to provide a space through which the products of combustion may 'es-- cape into the flue outlet, bale plates extending laterally from said drum at the extremities of said cut away portion in the top and terminating adjacent the bottom of said drum, and a fuel inlet in said drum, the latter being also provided with an opening diametrically disposed relative to said fuel inlet and adapted to permit of the escape of the products of combustion from the interior of said drum to the space between the same and said outer casing.
2. A stove comprising a fire box casing, an outer casing supported thereon and including a top having a flue outlet, a drum mounted in said outer casing and of a substantially cylindrical formation, the upper end of said drum being provided with an overhanging iange cut away to provide a space through which the products of combustion may escape into the flue outlet, bafHe plates extending laterally from said drum at the extremities of said cutaway portion in the top and terminating adjacent the bottom of said drum, a fuel inlet in said drum, the latter being also provided with an opening diametrically disposed relative to said fuel inlet and adapted to permit of the escape of the products of combustion from the interior of said drum to the space between the same and said outer casing, and a spacing flange arranged interiorly of said drum and engaging a portion of said firebox casing.
3. A stove comprising an outer casing including a top having a flue outlet, a drum mounted in said casing and provided With a fuel inlet and an escape opening diametrically opposite said inlet, and vertical baffle plates arranged on each side of said fuel inlet and terminating short of the bottom of said drum whereby the heated air and prodcuts of combustion are caused to pass from the escape opening in said drum around the latter and the lower ends of said baffle plates.
4. A stove comprising a fire box casing, an outer casing supported thereon and including a top having a flue outlet, a drum mounted in said outer casing and of a substantially cylindrical formation, said drum also having a fuel inlet and an escape opening diametrically opposite said inlet, vertical baffle plates arranged on each side of said fuel inlet and terminating short of the bottom of said drum whereby the heated air and products of combustion are caused to pass from the escape opening in said drum around the latter and the lower ends of said baffle plates, and an annular spacing flange arranged interiorly of said drum and engaging a portion of said fire box casing.
5. A stove comprising a fire box casing having an upstanding portion and an outwardly extending flange projecting from said portion, an outer casing having an inwardly extending flange resting upon the first-mentioned flange for supporting said outer casing in position, a drum mounted in said outer casing and having an outlet opening for the escape of products of combustion, and an inwardly extending flange engaging the upstanding portion of said fire box casing and baille plates carried by said drum.
