Be it known that I, l-IIRAM Q. HOOD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Carthage, in the county of Jasper and State of Missouri,

have invented a new and useful Stove, of

which the following is a specification.u

rlhis invention relates to stoves; and the object of the invention is to provide a simple and compact device of this character in which zo coal and wood can be used with equal facil-' ity to obtain good results.

My invention relates especially to the construction of the fire-box and the grate; and it consists in the peculiar construction and i5 arrangement of devices hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claim.

Referring to the drawings, 2 designates the z5 bottom plate of the stove, to which the side plates 3 and 4 and the end plates 5 and 6 are secured to form a substantially rectangular body, which is covered by the top plate 7, having a series of filling-openings, as 8, covered by the caps or lids 9, said parts usually being cast and being detachably united to the legs or other supports 10.

The stove has at the front side thereof the usual fire pot or chamber 12, of which the 3 5 grate constitutes the fioor, and beneath which the ash-pit 13 is disposed, and into which latter ashes and other refuse from the fire-pot 12 can be dumped or discharged at proper intervals.

The side plate 3 carries a supply-chute, as 14, leading into the re-pot 12 and normally closed by the cover 15, hinged to the top plate 7 and which is lifted to introduce coal into the fire, although the coal of course may be furnished by lifting the caps 9 over the fire-pot.

The oven is designated by 20, and it is shown Y as being in the form of a cylinder lying transversely across the stove.

The stove is furnished near the upper rear 5o side with a collar 30, surrounding the exitopening 31 and over which the smoke-pipe 32 is adapted to fit.

In conjunction with the oven I provide a damper, which is located in proximity to the exit-opening 31, the damper being designated by 33.

The end and top plates 6 and 7, respectively, are provided on their inner sides with ledges or flanges 36 37, extending entirely across the stove adjacent to the exit-opening 31 and which are adapted to be engaged by the edge of the damper when it is in its two positions. The fire being in the fire-box and the damper being in a substantially vertical position and in contact with the ledge 37, the heated air will fill the space between the upper side of the oven 2O and the top plate 7 up to the damper and the space around the under and far sides of the opening up to the opposite face of the damper, thereby thoroughly and uniformly heating the oven. To promote the draft of the stove, the damper will be thrown down into Contact with the ledge 36, so that the heated air does not pass around the oven, but simply passes directly from the fire-box to and through the eXitopening 31 and into the smoke-pipe 32.

For the purpose of preventing the application of undue heat to the oven near the firebox a guard, as 40, is disposed between the oven and the flreebox, said guard being shaped to correspond with the form of the oven and consisting, as will be evident, of an arc-shaped plate extending entirely across the stove and located a short distance from the periphery of the oven, so as to permit the circulation of the heated air between said parts.

No claim is made herein to the peculiarities in the construction of the stove hereinbefore referred to, nor are the same more particularly described herein, as they are described and claimed in a divisional application for Letters Patent of the United States, No. 8,197, filed by me March 10, 1'900, and allowed June 22, 1900.

The fire-box of the stove is provided with integral inwardly-extending flanges 44 in its side and one of its end walls and has an opening 43 in the other end wall corresponding with the front side of the stove, the lower side IOO of Which opening is on the same level as the upper sides of said anges. The bricks are supported on the said anges, as shown, and said flanges extend inward beyond the bricks and serve also to support the grate.

The grate 4l comprises a pan and has side Walls a and one end wall b bearing against the inner sides of said bricks, and the outer end of the grate extends through the opening 43and has the plate c bearing against the front side of the stove and closing said opening, and on said plate is a suitable handle.

It Will be understood that the grate may be Withdrawn from the fire-box through the said opening 43. The side and end walls of the grate prevent the overflow of ashes therefrom when the grate is removed from the stove. The bottom of the grate may be perforated, as at d in Figs. l and 2, When coal is used as the fuel or may be iinperforate, as at e, Fig. 3, when wood is used as the fuel.

Having described my invention, what I claim is- A stove having a fire-box provided with integral inwardly-extending lianges in its side f and one of its end Walls, and having an opening in the other end wall the lower side of which is on the saine level as the upper sides of said anges, the bricks supported on the said flanges, and the grate, also supported on the said flanges, which extends inward beyond the said bricks, the said grate comprising a pan and having side Walls and one en d wall bearing against the inner sides of said bricks, the outer end of said grate extending through the opening in one of the end Walls ofthe fire-box and having the plate bearing against the outer side thereof, when said grate is pushed in, the said grate being adapted to be Withdrawn from the said fire-box through the said opening, substantially as described.
