PATENT Qrrroa GEORGE B. ISHAM, OF BURLINGTON, VERMONT.
IMPROVEMENT IN PORTABLE STOVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,521, dated March 4, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE B. ISHAM, of Burlington, in the county of Ohittenden and in the State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stoves; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
My present invention is intended as an improvement upon the tire-pot granted to me January 19, 1869, No. 85,934; and consists in its construction and arrangement with a stovebod y, as more fully hereinafter set forth.
ln order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a vertical section of my stove, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the firepot.
A represents the base of the stove, with legs B B. O is the outside cylinder; D, the fire-pot; and G, the r movable cap or cover. The fire-pot D is provided with a series of slots, a a, from the upper edge downward for a suitable distance, and is made tapering, as shown in Fig. l. The fire-pot D is entirely disconnected from the removable cap or cover G, with a little space between the cap and the fire-p0t, the stove operating with an upward or downward draft, as desired. The fire-pot D is supported by a rim, d, in the stove, resting on the ash-pit in the base A, and having a shaking or other grate, E, within said rim. The pot is made larger at the top than the inside circle of the rim 1) of the stove-top G, suffieient for the smoke and gas to pass over the top of the pot free into the space between and around the tire-pot and the cylinder 0 of the stove, thereby causing the smoke and gas to burn up before entering the smoke-pipe H.
The rim (1 is perforated for the ashes outside of the grate E to fall through, and over the same I intend to place an annular plate with similar holes, and with a handle projecting outside, so that it can be moved to or open the holes at pleasure.
When the fire is kindled on the grate a lid must be put on the top of the stove. The under draft will ignite the tire quicker and prevent the smoke and gas from escaping into the room. After the coal is ignited the lid is removed, and the draft below shut, when there is a downward draft. \Vhen the fire is kindled on top, after filling the stove with coal, the lower draft is shut and the lid partly put on until the tire is started then the lid is removed, and there is an open fire radiating into the room free from gas or smoke. Furthermore, it is a perfect purifier to the atmosphere, equal in efi'ect to an open fire-place in the room. 7
It will be understood that the fire-pot is entirely free to be moved from the body of the stove at will, so that in case of its becoming cracked, broken, or burned out, or the accumulation of clinkers to its sides, it can be taken out, repaired, cleaned, or replaced'without disturbing the stove.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I. claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isa The fire-pot I), open at its bottom, and provided near its top with slots or openings at a, when disconnected from and used in combination with a suitable stove-body and a removable cap, Gr, constructed in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim'the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 5th day of
