DEVICE FOR STRINGING AINDA FILIN-G'PAPVERSJ.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 381,351, dated Apri1 17,-18 88. Y
' Application filed August 16. 1887. Serial No. 247.080. (No mode-l.) e
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM ERWIN ELAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Port. Royal, in the county of Beaufort and State of South Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Filing and Stringing Papers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making apart of this specification, and to theletters and figures of reference marked thereon.
- The present invention has relation to devices for stringing and filingp'apers, and is designed as an improvement upon my former patent, granted August 5,1884, No. 302, 989 and it con-I sists in the details of construction, substantially as shown inthe drawing, and hereinafter de- .scribed and claimed. V In the accompanying drawing, which represents a perspective view of my invention, A
represents a suitable base provided with a standard, B, said standard having an arm, 0, extending at rightlangles thereto and over the base above described. i v I The base, standard, and arm may be of any desirable construction and of any suitable design or shape found bestadapted to the purpose. The arm 0 is formed with a recess, a, in which isseated a spring-latch, D, bent out-n wardly at its extremity, as shown at b, theextremity of the arm being also curved outwardly, as shown at c, to conform to the curvatureiof the spring-latch'to facilitate the introduction of the stringing-wireE into the notched portion d of the arm and between it and the latch, the latter holding the wire in position when placing papers thereon. The stringingwire E at its lower end has a cross-bar, .e, which is slipped'under a holding device, F, preferably formed of wire, and secured in any suitable manner to the base A. This in connection with the spring-latch and arm holds the wire E firmly in an upright position, said wire at its upper extremity being pointed to facilitate perforating the papers when placed on thewire.-.
By attaching the holding device F to the base of the device, instead of to the standard, asin. my former patent, a perfectly straight stringing-wire may be used and held in an upright wire with papers.-

position, thereby facilitating filling of the To the upper end of the standard Bjis' suitably connected a laterally-swingingguard, G,'j
preferably constructedof spring-wire, thefree u end thereof extending outwardly at-right angles to the stringing-wire, as shown. .When not required for use, the guard can be swung out of the way, as shown in dotted lines, said guard having an eye at itsfreeend, through which theend of the stringing wire can project when j it is found necessary to make a more perfect connection between the two, the eyef being I formed by bending the wire into a ring, as
shown. When the stringing-wire is in position, as shown, the device is ready for use, the
eye f beingfirst disengaged therefrom, after which the papers can beslipp'ed on the pointed 7 end of the wire and pressed down against the arm C, and when the space between the guard and arm is nearly filledwith papers the stringing-wire is slipped from between the latch D and'arxn (land the papers passed down to the base A, or as far as the condition of the device will admit. When the eye is not engaged with the'stringing-wire,'the guard'will yield sufficiently to allow the papers to pass down to the arm 0, the guard being capable of use in either.

combination with a stringing-wire and;,.apiv--' oted, or laterally-swinging guard connected to the upright, and operating substantially as and for the purpose set forth. I
2. In adevice for stringingand filing papers, 'a suitable base having a h'oldingdev'ice connected thereto and provided with an upright having ahorizontally-ext'ending arm andga latch, in combination with an'upright string i 1; igwi r;e h aving,a cross-bar at one end, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. In a device for'stringing and filing papers,
the combination, with ast'ringing-wire pro vided with a cross-bar at its lower end, of a suitable base and standard, the latter having a horizontally-extending arm provided with a spring-latch for holding the stringing-wire in an upright position, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
guard, substantially as and for the purpose described;
6. In a device for stringing and filing papers,
the combination, with a stringing-wire provided with a cross-bar at its lower end, of an arm extending horizontally from the upright of the device and having a recess and a notch, and a springlatch seated in said recess, both spring and arm at their extremities being curved outwardly, as shown.
7. In a device for stringing and filing papers, the combination, with a detachable stringingwire, of a guard therefor, having an eye with which the point of the wire engages, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM nnwrn ELAM.
