NEWSPAPERLFIILEL` Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 2S, 1916.
Application led June 12, 1915. Serial No, 33,840.
a plurality of papers with equal firmness.
Further objects of the invention will appear as the following specific description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings which form a part of this application and in which Figure 1 is a plan view with the parts broken away, Fig. 2 is a an edge view,-Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on the line 3 3 vof Fig. 1, Fig. 4; is a side elevation of a key used in connection with the lever included in the locking mechanism.
Referring more particularlyV to the drawings 1 and 2 represent the clamping members, the former of which is provided with fastening devices such as wood screws 3 fo-r attaching the same to a table or other similar support, while the latter is provided with short screws 4l to give the device a uniform appearance. The members are held against longitudinal displacement by the guiding pins 5 seated in sockets 6 in the member 1 and arranged to extend in sockets 7 in the member 2. Surrounding these guide pins `and arranged in the sockets 6 and 7 are spiral springs 8 normally tending to press the clamping members apart as will be readily understood. The clamping member 2 is provided with a plurality of penetrating prongs 9 adapted to enter recesses and pockets 10 provided therefor in the member 1. Y
Secured to the edge of the member 1 is a face plate 11 which carries bearing arms 12 extending into the mortise 13 made to accommodate the same. At the outer end of each arm 12 there is secured a pivot pin 14 upon which lis pivoted the forked end 14 of a lever 15 extending through a slot in the face plate as shown. Pivoted between the ends of the forked portion 14 of the leverv 15 is an angular link 16 which connects with the spring hanger 17 by means of a hook 1S. The spring hanger is firmly 'embedded or secured within the member 2 at its free end and projecting into a recess or mortise arranged to accommodate the link and hook 18.` Nhen the lever is drawn into the position shown in dottedV lines in Fig. 1 the springs 8 will force the clamping members apart equally at both ends so as to facilitate the insertion of a paper. After the paper has been inserted the lever is drawn into the position shown in full lines which brings the pivotal point of the links 16 with the lever 15 beyond the center so as to automatically lock the lever in operated position.
The lever preferably is provided with a key-hole in its outer end for the insertion of any suitable type of key which is used to throw the lever to the position shown in dotted lines. n
What is claimedis:-
1. In a newspaper file comprising a pair of clamping members, means normally acting to hold the members in separated posi-v tion, guiding means, a lever pivoted to one of the members, means connecting the lever .and the other member which when the lever is `operated causes the members to be drawn together, said means including `a resilient part. I
2. A newspaper le comprising a pair of parallel clamping members, springs normally acting to hold the clamping members in separated position, guiding means for said members, a lever having a forked end pivoted to one of the members, a link pivoted to the forked end of the lever intermediate its ends, a spring hanger connected to the other member, and a hook between the spring hanger andthe link, said lever arranged to draw the members together.
3. A newspaper file comprising a pair of parallel clamping members, springs normally acting to hold the clamping members in separated position, guiding means for said members, a llever having a' forked end` pivoted toV one of the members, a link piv-v oted to the forked end of the lever inter- In testimony whereof I afx my signature mediate its ends, n spring hanger connected in presence of two witnesses. to the other member, `a hook between the OSCAR A STINSOW spring hanger and the link, said lever arranged to draw the members together and Witnesses: penetrating prongs carried by one of the P. H. POWELL, members. Y J AMES R. MIBNES.
