GURLING 00MB.
No. 379,650. Patented Mar. 20, 1888.
WITNESSES lfli fi Attorney UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES S. LEVY, OF NEW' YORK, N. Y.
CURLING-COMB.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 379.650, dated March 20, 1888.
Application filed January Q0, 1886. Serial No. 189.115.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES S. LEVY, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Curling-Combs,of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
Myinvention is an improved curling-comb; and it consists in the improvements hereinafter set forth and explained, whereby a comb is produced particularly adapted for use in curling operations and which is not liable to be' come impaired or injured by heat.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side view of a comb, the improved clamp device being represented in connection therewith; and Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view through the comb illustrated in Fig. 1, the clamp being represented in a different position.
A represents a handle, upon one end of which is formed the shank portion a, to which is secured a metallic cylindrical portion, B. The latter is provided with a series of teeth, c,which, in connection with theportion B, form a metallic comb, the said teeth and portion B being integral with each other.
0, Figs. 1 and 2, refers to a lever, which is provided near one end with an ear, d, extend ing into the forward end of an elongated slot formed in the lower face of the portion B and shank a, the said ear being transversely perfo rated for the passage of a pin,f, which also pierces the portion B. The major portion of the lever consists of a curved portion, 9, which is designed, when in contact with the face of the portion B, to accommodate itself to the curved face of said portion. The other portion of said lever consists of a short shank, h, which is curved outward from the portion B, as shown in Fig. 2.
D designates ashort metallic section, which is provided at its respective ends with depend ing lugs 'i i, the foremost one of which extends into the slot e and has side projections which play in side portions of the said slot e, the rear (No model.)
lug having a corresponding side projection which plays within the side portions of a second slot, 6, this construction preventing the removal of the section D,but enabling the longitudinal movement of the same in the slot. 1
The section D is provided at its front end and upon its upper face with a loop, j, which embraces the curved shank of the lever O. The other end of said section is provided with a lug or shoulder designed to form abearing for one of the fingers in operating the lever C.
From the foregoing description it will be apparent that the implement herein described is of comparatively simple and inexpensive construction and useful and efficient in operation.
Sliding the section D upward in its slot, as indicated in Fig. 2, theloop at the forward end of the same will operate to throw the curved portion ofthelever Gin contact with the curved face of the portion 13, so as to clamp and hold the curled or crimped hair upon said portion.
I am aware that previous to my invention it has been desi ned to construct a comb of a hollow cylinder having the bent portion integral therewith, the handle part being separate and havingan iron shank designed to be heated and inserted in the cylinder to heat the latter and its comb. I am also aware that it has been proposed to make a solid cylinder with a removable tooth-section. Myinvention will be readily distinguished from such constructions in that I form in a single piece the solid cylindrical crimping portion and the teeth, so as to adapt the device to be heated in a flame.
I claim The combination, with a curling-comb having an upper portion consisting of the solid metallic cylinder provided with teeth, of an adjustable clamping device for holding the hair on said cylinder, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES S. LEVY.
