Description

(NoMo COMBINED FORK AND BAKE.
.No. 453,776. Patented June 9,1891.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDIVARD ROSS MGCORY, 9F ELKHART, MISSOURI.
COMBINED FORK AND RAKE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 453,776, dated June 9, 1891.
Application filed September 13,1890. Serial No. 364,893- (No modeLl To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD Ross McConY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Elkhart, in the county of Bates and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Forks and Rakes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention. has relation to a combined fork and rake; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of parts, as
V hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claim.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive fork that may be readily changed for a rake for use on farms and in stables.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective View of a fork embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view, the device shown as a rake. Fig. 3 is a side view, partly in section. Figs. 4 and 5 are detail views of the several parts of my invention.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures The letter A indicates the fork-handle, having secured to it at one end a sleeve a, said sleeve having made integral therewith the forwardly-extending parallel perforated ears a, for a purpose presently explained.
The letter B indicates the tines of the fork of the well-known construction, the shank of which has formed upon it a cylindrical head 1), provided with a central perforation through which passes a bolt 1), and by means of which said head is pivotedbetween the cars a of the sleeve a.
The letter C designates a rod working within the sleeve (1, and is provided with the enlarged portion 0, having rising from it the thumbpiece or knob c, which projects through an elongated slot 0 formed in the sleeve a.
The letter D designates an opening formed in the sleeve a between the cars a, through which passes one end of the rod 0, and is designed to enter one of a series of holes 11 formed in the periphery of the head I). At
its rear end the sleeve (4 is provided with a screw-threaded opening, in which fits an adjusting-screw d, and in order that the rod C will engage one of the holes 19 formed in the head Zr, a coll-spring d is placed upon the rod 0 between the enlarged portion 0 and the end of the adj Listing-screw.
. In order that the tines of the fork when ad justed as a rake may be held firmly and per mit a greater strain being exerted when raking, a spring-plate E is secured upon the sleeve a, the outer or free end of which is'designed to abut against a projection formed on each side of the head I; opposite the holes Z1 in said head.
I do not desire to confine myself to the pre cise construction herein shown and described, as many minor changes may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
The operation of my improved fork and rake, taken in connection with the above description and accompanying drawings, may be briefly described as follows: Assuming the fork to be in the position shown in Fig. 1 and it is desired to change it to a rake, by pressing on the thumb-piece 0, cause the rod 0 to be withdrawn from the upper hole in the head I), then by turning the tines of the fork down cause the rod C to engage one of the lower holes in the head. It will thus be seen that the device may be readily changed from a fork to a rake.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combined fork and rake having its handle provided with the axially-pivoted head carrying the fork-tines and having a series of peripheral recesses and at each side of the latter a series of notches, the spring-pressed rod engaging said recesses and having a thumb-piece for its manipulation, and the bifurcated spring-plate adapted to engage said notches and aid the holding of said head, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDWARD Ross MCGORY.
