SHOE-BUTTONER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 542,711, dated July 16, 1895.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, DANIEL H. MUIR, of Lincoln, in the county of Lancaster and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoe-Buttoners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to an improvement in shoe-buttoners, the object being to provide a simple buttoner to facilitate the operation of buttoning shoes; and it consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts, which will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.

A represents a flat plate of metal, at one end of which a hook l is formed. The other end is bent substantially S-shaped to form two finger-holds 2 and 3 to receive the first and second fingers or any other two fingers of the operator, as the case may be, whereby a firm hold is had upon the buttoner.

B is a slide comprising conveniently a piece of metal folded around the plate and adapted to slide thereon,-the collars 5 5 at its ends constituting a means for limiting its movement, and a stop 6 on the plate being located in position to define this movement-that is to say, with the collars on either side of it.

The slide is furnished at its lower end with a foot 7, which is fitted to the side and back of the plate and preferably has a notch 8 at its extreme end whose function it is to engage the material in which {the buttonhole is formed to push it from the hook or hold it while the hook is drawing the button hooked through. The foot performs the further function of extending the bearing of the buttoner upon the upper as the handle end is rotated axially first to the left and then to the right in clearing the button of the hole and bringing it through, the buttoner being turned to the left while the button is drawn into the hole and then rotated to the right to bring it the rest of the way through. The edge 9 of this foot is rounded or beveled to facilitate this rotary movement of the buttoner. The

foot by closely fitting the side and back of the plate prevents the material in which the buttonhole is formed from becoming caught.

The slide is provided with a thumb-piece 10 or a recess or equivalent means to receive struction it isobvions that slight changesv might be made in the form and arrangement of the several parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention,

and hence I do not wish to limit myself to the exact-construction herein set forth; but, Having fully described my invention, what I'claim as new, and'desire to'secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination with a plate having a hook at one end and a handle on the other end, and a stop formed at a point between the hook andhandle, of a sleeve comprising a piece of metal havingcollars' thereon which surround the plate and by which the piece of metal is held on the plate, said collars adapted to strike the stop whereby to limit the sliding movement of the sleeve, and a thumb piece on the sleeve for its easy manipulation, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination with a plate having a hook on one end ahandle on the other end and a stop formed at a point between the hook and handle, of a sleeve comprising a piece of metal folded around the sides and one edge of the plate, collars on the ends of the sleeve surrounding the plate, said collars adapted to hold the sleeve in place on the plate and strike the stop whereby to limit the sliding movement of the sleeve, and a thumb piece on the sleeve, substantially as set forth.
