UNITED STATES PATENT CFFICE.
JOSEPH SPRING, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
LASTING=TOOL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 379,035, dated March 6, 1888.
Application filed January 16, 1888. Serial No. 260,888. (N 0 model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
.Be it known that I, J osErrr SPRING, of New Haven,in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Lasting-Tools; and I do hereby de clare the following, when taken in connection with accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specifieation, and represent, in-
Figure 1,a side view of the lasting-tool; Fig.
' 2,-a transverse sectional view showing the tool as in operation.
This invention relates to an implement to facilitate the drawing of the edges of the upper over onto the insole; and it consists in a stock adapted to be supported at points longitudinally on the bottom of the last, combined with two pairs of jaws, the principal jaw of each pair hinged upon apintle vertically adjustable in said stock, and so as to swing in a plane transversely across the last, the other jaw of each pair hinged to the principal jaw, and so that the noses of each pair of jaws are adapted to grasp the edges of the upper, each principaljaw having an adj usting-screw adapted to bear upon its companion jaw, so as to force the grip of the jaws upon the upper,and with a screw transversely through said principal jaws adapted to force the said two pairs ofjaws toward each other, as more fully hereinafter described.
The stock is of 'U shape, consisting of two legs, AA, connected at their upper end, the lower ends being adapted to rest upon thelast in a central longitudinal plane. In the connection between the two legs is a vertical screw, B, which carries at its lower end, be tween the legs, a loop, 0, to which the two principal jaws D E are hinged upon a conimon pintle,F, and so that the jaws may swing in a plane at right angles to the plane of the stock, the screw B serving to raise or lower the jaws, as occasion may require. To the jaw D a companion jaw, d, is hinged, as at b,
and to the jaw E a like companionjaw, e, is hinged, as at f, the opening between the jaws being substantially parallel with the plane of the stock. The jaws d e are each extended to form, respectively,a tail, 9, and through each principal jaw a clamping-screw, G, is introduced from the outside, to bear against the tails of the inner jaws, d e, and so that each pair of jaws may be clamped upon the leather by turning the screws G or be released therefrom by returning the said screws.
H represents a screw provided with a suitable handle, and which extends through the said jaws in a plane at right angles to the axis upon which thejaws are hung. The screw is provided with a collar, I, which takes a hearing, say, in one jaw, E, and the other jaw is provided with a nut, J, through which the screw works. The nut and collar are adj ustable vertically to some extent, so as to allow the screw to work freely under the swinging movement of the jaws.
In lasting the stock is set upon the last K, as represented in Fig. 2, and the jaws are clamped upon the'respective edges of the upper. Then the screwBmay be turned to draw the upper onto the last,and then the screw H, adj usted,will force the jaws toward each other, to draw the upper into proper shape upon the bottom of the last.
g I claim- The combination of the stock A, adapted to rest upon the bottom of the last, the screw B, vertically adjustable in said stock, the two principal jaws D E, hung to said screw 13, companion jaws d e for each of said principal jaws, the said jaws d e extended to form tails 9, adj usting-screws G through said principal jaws and upon the tails of said jaws cl 6, with the adj ustingscrew H through said jaws and adapted to force the jaws toward each other, substantially as'described.
. JOSEPH SPRING.
