No. a90,.4o2. PatentedwOct. 2, 1888.

JAMES ROSE, OF FRANKLIN, MASSACHUSETTS.
PIPE-NVRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 390,402, dated October 2. less.
Application filed June 21,1838. Serial No. 277,767. (X0 model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES ROSE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Franklin, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Trenches; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a side elevation, Fig. 2 an edge view, and Fig. 3 a longitudinal section in part, of a pi pe-wrench made in accordance with my invention.
The nature of my invention is defined in the claim hereinafter presented.
In the drawings, A denotes a toothed jaw, which forms a part of the shank or handle portion B of the wrench, said jaw being rabbeted in each of two sides, as shown at a, to receive portions 1) of a strap, 0, pivoted at c to an ear, d, forming part of thejaw A. The strap G en velops three sides of the shank D of the adj ustable toothed jaw E, the inner edge'of the said shank bearing against the edge otthe ear (I, as shown in Fig. 3.
At its lower end the shank D is provided with an eye, a, on which rests a nut, F, through which a screw, 9, screws. Said screw passes freely through the eye 0, and at its upper end bears against the periphery of the ear d, a portion of which is curved concentric with the pivot c, as shown, and said screw is held against said ear by a pin, which passes through the strap and the screw, as shown at h. Said strap has ears i 13, which bear against two sides of the shank B, as shown, and the jaw A has two ears, is k, which bear against two sides of the shank D, as represented, said ears serving to steady or sustain the jaws of the wrench in their relations to each other. The screw g has in its lower end a recess, Z, which receives the free end of a spring, m, fastened to the shank B by a screw, as represented.
The nut F extends into a notch, a, made to receive it in the shank D, and when revolved in one direction will cause an increase in the distance between thejaws, and when revolved in the opposite direction will diminish the distance between said jaws.
This wrench has been found to be admirably adapted for the purpose for which it is designed, and will not fail to do the work required or expected of it; and should the screw and nut become so much worn as to fail to perform their ofiice they can be easily removed by withdrawing the pin it from the screw and strap and new ones substituted for them.
Having described my invention, what I claim 1s- The pipewrench, substantially asshown and described, it consisting of the toothed jaw A, provided with a shank and handle, and cars k 75, as shown, and rabbcted to receive the strap 0, pivoted to the portion d ofsaid jaw, as represented, the said strap holding the toothed jaw E in connection with its fellow jaw, and having ears 1; to bear on the shank B, and a screw supported by it bearing against the portion d, as shown, said screw connecting with a nut arranged in a notch, 12, and bearing on an eye, 6, formed on the lower end of the shank of thejaw E, the screw passing through the eye 0 and connecting with the free end of the spring in, fastened to the shank B, all be ing arranged and constructed essentially as set forth and represented.
In testimony whereof I affix my siguatu re i n presence of two witnesses.
JAMES ROSE.
