IMPROVEMENT IN SHANK-LASTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 148,666, dated March 17, 1874 application filed January 17, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN CAMPBELL, of Bath, in the county of Sagadahoc and State of Maine, have invented a new and Improved Shank Laster, of which the following is a specification The invention relates to the arrangement of levers and springs with the jaws for griping the edge of the uppers, whereby they are caused to take a firm hold, or to release it, as hereinaiter described.
The jaws are closed to gripe the leather by eccentric levers, and opened by springs.
Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved shank-laster; and Fig. 2 is a side elevation, and Fig. 3 is a side elevation, of one of the pairs of jaws.
A and B represent the two jaws of a pair. The jaw A has a long arm, 0, projecting from outside, and the jaw B is pivoted to it at D. At the upper ends is a cam-lever, E, for forcing the lever ends together, and a spring, F, is arranged between them to open them, to release the leather after the work is done. A
suitable distance from the jaws the arms 0 are fitted on the right and left hand screws G, and
beyond the screw they have a rod, H, parallel with the screws, to keep them parallel with each other when straining the leather, said rod being fastened in one arm, and fitted to slide in the other. The screw-rod has a handle, I, by which to turn it for forcing the jaws to stretch the shank over the last. The arms are arranged to project to the right of the jaws, so that in use they extend along the sole of the last to carry the operating-screw and the guide-rod out of the way, and permit convenient tacking of the leather.
I do not claim a right-and-left screw, and parallel guide-rod for operating the gripingjaws; but
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination of the cam-levers E, spring F, jaws A B, pivoted together, and operated by screw G, as shown and described.
