UNITED SrrrrnsI PATENT EDWARD L. MOR'RIS, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN VISES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. v150,180, dated April 28,1874;y application filed 'y i October 20, 1873.
To all 'whom t may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD L. MORRIS, ot'- dial hole formed in the screw-shaft, and, being thus restricted in its position, stands often in the way of the workman or the work to be secured in the vise, and, being also the only means of operating` the screw, of necessity makes said operation slow and bungling. The object of my invention is to overcome the dis! advantages above mentioned, and also to ad! mit of the use of a very long lever without interfering with the convenient working of said screw. My invention consists in thev construction of the screw-shaft of a vise for the interlock of a lever therewith, and in the combination, with the said screw-shaft, of a lever, which is hung loosely thereon in such a manner that when not used to operate the screw-shaft it shall hang at rest, not affecting the action of the screw, or being affected itself by the action of the screw, and when required for operating said screw-shaft it can be readily interlocked with and made to seize the screwshaft for turning the same, and thereby secure a firm gripe of the article between the jaws. My invention further consists in the combination with a screw-shaft and a lever, each constructed and arranged for operation, as above described, of a crank permanently attached to the said screw-shaft, by which crank the movable jaw of the vise may be readily adjusted to about the size of the article to be secured therein before engaging the lever with the screw, to give greater purchase to secure the work firmly in the vise.
In the accompanying plates of drawings the present invention is illustrated by views showing the same in various forms of construction, but all involving the principle of the invention, as hereinbefore stated; and in these plates- Figure l is a longitudinal vertical section on the line of the axis of the screw. Fig.; 2 is 'a transverse section on .lineay x; of Fig. 1. Figs. 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and Qfaredetached views in detail, illustrating different modesot' carrying out my invention, which-viewswillfibe hereinafter particularly referredto..I
In the drawings, Figs. l and2, Avis the-fixed jaw and B the movable jaw. The jaw A is provided with the nut C rmly secured therein for the screw D towork in, to move thejaW B. The screw D issecured by-meansvof-its groove c and the screw-pin b,fasrshown, and all of the above in its construction and .operation is well known vand common. The: screw D is provided with an enlargementoutside,of the jaw B, and in the periphery of this enlargement are formed a series ofradial holes vor sockets, c, as shown in Figs.' l and 2.; Eis "a lever, provided at one end withan oblonghole or slot, E', which embraces the enlarged.-por tion of the screw, and the *levery depends -perpendicularly from-the screw,- when at rest, as shown in- Figs. l and 2. Y The-oblong hole -E of the lever E has a pin, d, at its lower side, which pin projects toward the center of the hole E', and in its length is such that when the lever depends .from the shaft it will not interfere with` the turning of the shaft. F is a small wheel, secured to the outer end of the screw-shaft D, to be used as a hand-wheel, or it may be provided vwith* the crank-handle G, or a simple crank may be substituted for the wheel, if desired. operate the screw D for adjusting the jaws to about the size of the article to be secured therein. The wheel F, under the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2, also serves to hold the lever against escape from the shaft D, and furthermore, together with the jaw B, as a guide to the lever in interlocking or disengaging it from the screw-shaft D, as hereinafter described. In using the vise above de scribed, irst adjust the jaws by the handwheel F to about the size of the article to be secured in the jaws. Then interlock the pin d of the lever E with a hole or socket, c, of the screwshaft D by moving the lever in the proper direction to carry the pin d toward the center of the screw-shaft, after which apply force to the lever, as with a lever-handle attached to. the shaft of a vise, as ordinarily.
This hand-wheel is used to I The screw-shaft is thus turned by the lever E and the jaws' thereby made to more firmly gripe the article in the vise, and when a sufficient gripe is obtained then move the lever in the opposite direction to that above stated,
thereby breaking the interlock with the shaft, which leaves the lever free to depend from the shaft. While the lever depends from the screw-shaft, as above stated, it in no manner interferes with the ordinary operation of the shaft, and, as is obvious, it is entirely out of the way as regards the work held or the movements of the workin an, while at the same time, when desired, it can be brought into action on the screw to secure the desired leverage.
In the Figs. 3, .4, and 5 the interlock of the lever E is illustrated as obtained by aprojeetthe application of force to the lever.
In Fig. 7 is shown a construction ofthe lever `E by which the interlock of the lever and shaft is secured by sliding the pin or rod h on the lever into a notch, lor hole, or recess, i, of the screw-shaft D.
In Fig. 8 the interlock of the lever E with the shaft is shown as being made by setting the lever in and between any two of the series of teeth K on the face of the hand-wheel F to the shaft D.
In Fig. 9 the lever E and the hand-wheel of the shaft are shown as similarly constructed with teeth, so that by sliding the lever toward or away from the hand-wheel it can be engaged with or disengaged from the handwheel, and thus, through it, engaged with or disengaged from the shaft.
Under each and all the constructions and arrangements of the lever E and screw-shaft D, or part attached thereto, hereinabove described, obviously the result aimed at by the present invention is obtained, and they each and all embrace the invention, which, as before stated, substantially consists in the c011- struction ofthe screw-shaft of a vise for the interlock of a lever therewith, and in the coinbination, with the said screw-shaft, of a lever hung loosely upon said screw-shaft, so as to i be readily interlocked with and disengaged from the sclew-shaft, as and in a manner and for the purpose described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by'Letters Patent of the United States, is-
In combination with the movable jaw of a vise, and the screw, with or without the handwheel, for operating the same, the lever E, arranged to hang loosely upon the screw-shaft, and to be engaged with and disengaged from the screw at will, substantially as described.
Executed at Boston this 16th day of October, 1873.
