GARMENT STRETCHER.

To on whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FREDERICK UADMUS, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in GarmentStretchei-s, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.

My invehtion consists of improvements in devices for stretching garments, more particularly undcrshirts, formed of flannel or other material, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.

Figures 1, 2, and 3 represent views of a garment-stretcher embodying my invention, the same being shown in different positions.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.

Referring to the drawings, A represents the body of the stretcher, the same consisting of the central piece, B, and side pieces, 0, which are formed of slats or bars of wood or other suitable material.

D represents the arms of the stretcher, the same consisting of bars 11 F, of wood or other suitable material, the bars E being pivoted to the top of the side pieces, 0, and extended inwardly, forming the stretcher-pieces G, which are pivoted to the central piece, B, thus connecting said piece with the side pieces, 0, at

the top thereof.

The bars F are pivoted to the side pieces, 0, below the bars E, so that the arms when in operative position are widened at their places of attachment to the body A.

To the lower ends of the side pieces, 0, are pivoted the bars H J, whose inner ends are pivoted to the lower end of the central piece, B, thus connecting the lower ends of the central and side pieces, the bar J being lengthened, forming a lever. At or about the place of junction of the bars 0 and 1-1 is secured a pin, K, and in the outer end of the lever or bar J is an opening, L, to receive said pin K. It will be seen that when the lever J is moved toward the head of the body the pieces 0 approach the piece 13 and the arms fold downwardly, as will be seen in Fig. 1, whereby the stretcher is in compact condition and may be readily carried, packed, or stored. By moving the lever J in opposite direction the pieces G again approach the piece 13 and the arms close toward each other at the head of the body, whereby said arms may be said to be raised. (See Fig. 2.) Ashirt may now be drawn over the body A and arms D, and the lever J is then moved to a position at a right angle to the piece 13, whereby the pieces 0 separate from said piece B and the arms D assume a horizontal position and separate at their inner ends, or, in other words, the body and arms are spread apart or expanded, (see Fig. 3,) thus stretching the garment, as is evident. The lever J is now fitted on the pin K, and the parts of the stretcher are thereby held in locked position. When the shirt is sufficiently stretched or dry, thelever is released and moved, as in Fig. 2, and the shirt may be readily withdrawn from the contracted stretcher, and the latter then folded, as in Fig. 1.

It is evident that the device may be employed for stretching drawers and pants; but it is desirable to shape the body and arms to conform to the contour of drawers or pants.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isi 1. A garmentstretcher having a body con sisting of a central and side pieces and pro vided at one end with bars each of which is pivotally connected to both the central piece and one of the side pieces, and bars pivoted to the side pieces, and having at the other end bars each of which is pivoted to the central piece, and one of the side pieces, said parts being combined substantially as described.

2. The body A, consisting of the central piece, B, and parallel side pieces, 0, the bars E, each of the latter being pivoted to said central piece and one of the side pieces, the bars F, each of which is pivoted to one of the side pieces, the bar J, pivoted to the -central piece and to one of the side pieces, and the bar H, pivoted to the other side piece and the central piece, the bar 11 having the pin K and the bar J having an opening, L, to engage said pin, said parts being combined substantially as and for the purpose set forth.'
